Is it possible to make desktop icons stay where I want them, or are we stuck with left side arrangements? I would like to be able to move individual icons wherever and snap them to grid.

Spacegold, right-click on the desktop, select View from the menu. Make sure that "Align to Grid" is on and "Auto Arrange" is off. Move your icons where you wish on the desktop. Once you have it the way that you like it, I suggest that you save the layout since there are a number of operations and programs that will rearrange them again.

What DOO you know? I downloaded the layout files, and did with them faithfully as the instructions required, and lo and behold, the new items did not appear in the context menu for computer. Rebooted just to be sure and still no save and restore. Can't figure out what is wrong. It was pretty simple to do.

Spacegold - I gave it a try too, but I found I only could see the menu when I clicked on the recyclebin icon or computer icon.
But even though the menu appeared, it doesn't do a thing.
Threw my icons all through one another and had to put them back manually, because it does not work!

Spacegold, Maybe one way to deal with it is to make a "Vista native" toolbar. Stick all your Icons into a folder on the desktop and then push this folder all the way (but really all the way) to the top of your screen (or on one of the sides). That will make a nice toolbar where they will stay. Then you only have that folder as repository on the desktop. That is not exactly what you were trying to do, but it gets around the icons "tumbeling" all the time.

Do you use a program that changes your theme ?

No, LH, I just use a personalized classic desktop (like XP). Thanks for the input, whs, but that is not quite what I am after. I just want to have the freedom to put any icon wherever I happen to want it on the desktop and keep it there. I did as dubya suggested, and got them the way I want them, but I don't know how stable it is.

Good grief, Sarah, have you considered having those two teeth pulled and getting fitted with dentures? >)

When I first read this a few day ago I remembered a program called Fences by Stardock, but it wasn't released yet so I didn't bother posting about it.
I just saw a post on Areoxp that it was released. http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/index.asp

I understand you might not want a program running to do what you wanted, but it looks interesting.

EDIT: just saw this on the download page "This release is a beta / community preview, and will expire on August 31, 2009."
