When I'm in the "Owner" folder, you get a list of various different folders: Music, Pictures, Documents as well as Desktop. This is where my problem lies, the desktop folder icon is no longer blue like the rest of them, it turned into a normal yellow looking folder. How can I get back the blue folder? Thanks.

Yes, I read that article, however, this is for the desktop icon and not the music icon. Also, the desktop icon, under properties does not have a "customize" tab.

Here is the change for the desktop folder,

run:

notepad %USERPROFILE%\desktop\desktop.ini

paste:

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

I had to channel the HTG ;)

I typed the first line into the search bar and hit enter. Then I copy and pasted the next 3 lines and I clicked save and the desktop icon still remained yellow :(
Is there something I may not be doing correctly?

(I also restarted the computer after just to check and still nothing...)

Type the first part into the 'Run' command line. That should open notepad where you paste the preceding.

(please post back your entire copied file, we need to see exactly how its being entered.)

Okay, I open the run commmand.

Then I type in "notepad %USERPROFILE%\desktop\desktop.ini" (without quotations)

It open a notepad document entitled desktop, I then leave the first line blank and type in:

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

Then I go file, save, and close the document.

I open my user folder only to find that the desktop folder still hasn't changed.

Does this help?

The same thing happened to me, after I deleted my Desktop folder once. I remade the folder in Safe Mode, added content, and it worked.

Right, what I did when I deleted it, was open my "Documents" folder, make a new folder called Desktop. I then right clicked it, set the location to "C:\Users\{USRNAME}\Desktop" and then dragged something to the desktop. Rebooted and it worked.

I'm having the exact same problem. Tried doing everything suggested here, even tried deleting the iconcache and restarting the system. Nothing helps. Somehow Windows disregards the desktop.ini file residing in the %USERPROFILE%\desktop\ folder and does its own thing and Desktop folder icon remains yellow. Anyone found a way to fix this ?

Drag something to your desktop. It should automagically change the colour of the icon after a while.

Nope. Tried dragging things to the desktop. Waited a while, even rebooted after a while, and still waited a while more. No change.

You could try setting the Desktop folder to read only if it's not already. I've read that explorer only reads the desktop.ini file if the folder is set to read only.

Actually Mike's suggestion just did its magic a few minutes ago and my desktop folder icon is now back to its original color. Thanks for the help!

If any of you vista folders revert themselves to the default yellow folder, drag "that folder only" onto the desktop and it will automatically change itself back to the vista folder...then click "Ctrl + Z" to send it back and it will be the vista folder again...

Did you try renaming it, and then renaming it back? That worked for me.
