I have two issues..actually, annoyances, right now, but I'll post them in separate topics.

This one has to do with the DeskHack dll that is supposed to help identify themes that all normally show up as Aero in the appearance settings window. The following is the exact post I made on the original forum, but I don't know if anyone lives there anymore :(

"I've tried everything I could think of to get this to work! (which, admittedly, isn't alot)

The error I get states that the dll was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80071a91. Same error window whether I run as administrator, or try to manually register. Only difference is with using cmd, the cmd window tells me 1 file copied..press any key to continue.

I've searched online for this error code, but everything I found has to do with Windows update, which I'm assuming has nothing to do with my problem...my updates have all been fine and I don't really want to try to fix something that might not be broken.

I'd really love for this to work. It would make life a lot easier. Any ideas about this error?? Please?"

So, what do you think...fixable?

I'd try running a registry cleaner like Ccleaner and see if that helps with your issues. At the very worse, you would have to uninstall the program, re-run the registry cleaner (reboot to be safe) then reinstall the program. I'm not sure about the error, but it almost sounds like the dll is loading, but just looking in the wrong place.

Are you using 64-bit Vista?

I read somewhere that copying the 32-bit DLL to the Windows\SysWow64 directory would allow you to register it. I haven't tried this yet... been on my list of things to test.

@Budohorseman, Ya know, I downloaded ccleaner a while back, but haven't gotten around to installing it...registry cleaners make me nervous (bad past experiences *shiver*). Is this one safer than most...I mean, for someone who wouldn't know a registry key from a hole in the floor? I think I might have read that somewhere, which may be why I downloaded it in the first place. I will get over my fear and try it :)

@The Geek, whoops, probably should have mentioned what my system is. No, I'm using Home Premium SP1 32-bit. And I don't think there is a corner of my pc (slight exaggeration) I didn't copy that file to, and try to run it :(

Ccleaner is a favorite of pretty much all of us here. Just tell it to make a back-up and let it rip. To be honest, if I haven't run it in months it usually takes a few passes before it finds no issues. It hasn't broken me yet, which reminds me that I should get rid of some of those older back-ups....

CCleaner is one of the mildest (safest) registry cleaners around... you can also review what it recommends and choose exactly what you should clean up. I wouldn't just blindly click "clean"... review the list and see if the items are related.

Just make sure when you install CCleaner that you uncheck the option for Yahoo Toolbar, or else you'll have to uninstall the toolbar separately.

I use CCleaner mostly for the system temporary file cleanup, and not for the registry cleaning part. I even have mine set to run on a schedule:

Probably should have waited and read responses before jumping in the pool, but when I decide something, I just kind of do it, like, immediately.

Anyway, I did uncheck yahoo toolbar...another toolbar is the last thing I need and I couldn't think of any reason I would run it from the browser anyway. So I ran the cleaner and then immediately after, the registry cleaner. It seemed to come up with TONS of issues, and I started looking through them before I lost patience and just clicked the fix all button. I'm not the most patient person in the world and it's not like I understood half of what I was looking at...no smoke(lol), rebooted fine, found some more issues so I cleared them out again. And, yes, I had it back things up first :)

Now, on to the bad news. Still no joy with DeskHack. That kills me because I downloaded loads of themes after I got over my fear of patching the system, and the only way for me to keep them straight is to constantly switch out the folders so there's never any more than two Aero entries in the list; a bit tedious to say the least. Otherwise, I get very confused, because there are such similarities between some of the themes.

Maybe I'm just one of the unlucky ones this isn't going to work for...bummer *sigh* :(

On the up side, I feel like I do whenever I finish my spring cleaning lol
