I've got a Dell inspiron 1525. They add something called Mesia Direct which helps to play media.( you can read abt it on dell website) now the thing is that that it can't read .avi files and .divx files. I searched a lot on Dell website but could not find any solution.
Help plz

I think it just uses Windows Media Player. So the restrictions would apply to that.

Dell's MediaDirect software lives in a hidden partition which contains a stripped-down kernel of some kind. The benefit is that this will boot up to the main screen quickly. It's a simple interface with big icons and text, much like Windows Media Center, making it good for watching on a TV. The downside to the hidden partition, stripped-down kernel thing is that it can't be upgraded as far as I know. So, that means you probably can't add Divx support or anything else that's not already built in. It seems there is a new version of MediaDirect, v3 up from v2, so some of this may not apply anymore.

If it's true that you can't add support for new file types, this feature is not very useful. I would suggest that you run Media Center instead and put the laptop in hibernation. It won't launch as fast, but it will have more features.

Hmm. Apparently, there are ways to mod the MediaDirect software to play other file types. Use at your own risk -- this procedure looks a bit dodgy to me:

from what i understood dell media direct could be turned on without booting up the computer. i wiped my hard drive and reformatted without reinstalling it.
