I have a dell Vistro 220 desktop with vista on it. I shut it down Sunday morning and it took forever to shut down, it stayed on a blue screen saying shut down so I turned it off using the power button on the tower. Now when I try to boot it up I get the blue screen with a bunch of errors on it. I ran some tests by going into the boot menu and I get these error codes. I think it has a bad virus but it won't let me boot in safe mode, repair, or any of the other options in the boot menu. I've tried starting normal too and I get the blue screen. Is there any way to fix this problem or get my stuff off the hard drive? I have photos of my kids on my hard drive that I haven't backed up and I have important documents that I was working on for my job on there as well. I did some of the diagnostic tests and got through most of them with a pass but when I got to one it stopped and I got these error codes: 0F00:065D and 0F00:0232 MSG: DISK_0 - Self-test Read error and it won't go no further. Please help me.

It could just be 'scrambled' from an improper shutdown. In that case, you need to run CHKDSK :

1. Get the Windows XP CD
2. Put in the CD
3. Switch on your Laptop/PC
4. Press F12
5. Boot from your Windows XP in your CD/DVD drive
6. Choose from a menu the DVD/CD drive
7. Press any key to start installation
8. Press R for Repair
9. Get to the C:\ prompt
10. Enter "chkdsk c: /f" at the prompt
11.Restart laptop/pc

If it works, fine, otherwise, sounds like a DEAD hard drive, if still in Warranty, call Dell.

Sorry, I didn't see the release on the top.

If you press F12 when you see the DELL logo, it should get you to a restore partition then. From there, follow step 7.

If that doesn't work, but you can get to the RESTORE partition, restore the drive, but make sure it runs CHKDSK first and DO NOT FORMAT. It should repair everything.

Might also want to call Dell, they'd probably sell you the Vista DVD for $10.
