I have Excel 2000. Everytime I add a shortcut to my desktop for easy access to an Excel spreadsheet, the shortcut icon doesn't show it as an excel program. When I right click to "open with" Excel, its not on the list. When I browse available programs, I find the Excel .exe and select it, (highlight/click, double click, etc.)but nothing happens. It doesn't add it to the list of available programs, nor does it open the shortcut.

When I open Excel seperatly, then select the spreadsheet I want from my document file, it works just fine, but I can't seem to open the file as a shortcut from my desktop, nor set Excel as the default to always open it. Any ideas?

What happens when you just double click on your spreadsheet in the Document folder (without Excel being open). And also have a look once in Programs > Default Programs > Set Associations whether the file type for those spreadsheets has the right association (check the spreadsheet file type in it's Properties - they usually start with "xl...")

Try repairing the installation of office. I think they added that for the 2000 edition

I had a similar problem with Photoshop; once in awhile the default "open with" program would change from PSCS2 to PS7. When I told the computer to always use PSCS2, it would ignore me (probably laughing at me), leaving the jpg extension associated with PS7.

What I would do in XP: My Computer --> View --> Options --> File Types Tab. Then, I would highlight jpg and delete it. Then I would create a new file type association for jpg (to PSCS2) and all would be well again.

But it appears that Vista has removed the ability to delete a file type extension. So the above tip would probably work if you have XP. Maybe someone here knows how to remove a file type extension association in Vista.

When I double click the file without Excel being open it does not open. Works tries to open it, but the file extentions are ".xls".

I think RuAware is on to something with repairing the installtion. What would you suggest? Any other ideas?
