Creating a link

This is a very basic question from a novice.Could someone please tell me (in simple english if possible) how to turn a url typed into an e-mail or a forum input like this, into a usable link?

In IE, simply click 'Page' on the toolbar up top and then 'Send Link by Email'. In Firefox, right click.

In any email, just type out (or copy and paste) the full address, i.e. www.howtogeek.com , remembering to leave a space before the first letter and after.
