knowing that the above gadget won't work in some cases (also not work on my machine)(probably due to C++ as mentioned in the article), here is another free tiny software that can handle the job.

DesktopOK 3.41 for windows 7 or 8

it also has another simpler version for desktop icon hiding only.
AutoHideDesktopIcons 2.01 for windows 7 or 8

both gadgets don't require installation and can be run as a standalone executable.
