Copying files from iMac to iPad

I have downloaded a .avi file from torrents and i want to move it to my iPad and play it over there on VLC. Can I do this?

What is the nature of the torrent, they are usually illegal, therefore as a heads up this thread may be closed

You will have to convert it to an IOS friendly format such as .Mp4. Or you can just use Airvideo or Airplay to stream it to your Ipad.
Also Avi for ipad

Where does it matter where it came from? If he/she had just said, "I have an .avi file I need to transfer over to my ipad?" Would they get the same response?
