Hey, I'm having issues with my laptop. I restarted it and now all that comes up is this "configuring updates: stages 1 of 3". every time stage 1 completes, my laptop restarts and it opens up system repair. I've tried booting in safe mood, I've system restored, but the same damn "configuring updates: stages 1 of 3". Do you have any idea how I can fix this?

I do not have a Windows Vista DVD, so please help me find another way

Shutdown the machine. Unplug everything. Remove the battery. Leave for 30 minutes. Put battery back in. Bootup.
Does it still happen ?

monotune, hello. If you can get to a Windows desktop, even Safe Mode, try the Windows Update Reset FixIt tool from Microsoft:

Were the [ manual Instructions ] located in the middle of the page in an old KB or on Technet before ????

It's good to see this type of MS detailed documentation. :)

Rick, are you maybe thinking of this forum post? I found the link to there from here. The forum post then refers to another KB article at version 6.1. If the story goes back any further, I can't find it.
