When I start my computer, a dell windows xp, after the loading thing before you see your mouse pointer, the screen stays black for about 1 or 2 minutes. Then I see my mouse pointer and everything else takes longer to get started. Then once im finally on, I have no start menu, and no, it isnt sized down. This has happened before and all I did was restart my computer a bunch of times until it worked, then i put it on standby instead of shuting it down. It isn't working this times though. Also none of my programs work once I get it started without a start menu.

Do you have a Windows key on your keyboard? It's between Ctrl and Alt on mine and it just has a Windows logo, no text. Press and release that key will bring up the start menu.

Try booting into Windows Safe Mode. Press F8 immediately after the Dell logo goes away, but before Windows starts. It's a small window of time, but you can press F8 repeatedly to get it. In the special text-mode menu that comes up, choose Safe Mode and see if your taskbar and start button are present.

@Romave,
Seeing that you " Can't " see te taskbar, try this:
Win + R = Run,
in the run box enter : explorer.exe
I used to have this problem before in my old machine,
and thats how i solved it.
Try it and tell me what was the result!

@xenomex. That should be Win + R (not Ctrl)
