My computer shows removable device F or G whenever I boot up, but there are no usb devices pluged in. When I do use a usb device and want to safely remove it I never know if I should pick F or G. The only way I can get rid of this non-existent device is to go through the safely remove routine.

I am running an HP Pavilion laptop with Vista Home Premium.
Any help welcome.

Thanks.

Bob, hi. Your HP might have a media card reader that is connected via USB. What is the model number of that Pavilion?

Hi Scott,
My laptop is mod. # dv6725CA. I do not have any usb devices plugged in when I boot up other than a Microsoft wireless mouse. I just tried this with the mouse unplugged with the same results. This time when I rebooted my computer showed removable disc G. When I double click on G it tells me to insert device. I also have an HP 4240 printer plugged into another usb port but it makes no difference if its plugged in or not.

This glitch is more annoying than serious and it bugs me that I can't figure it out.
Anyways, thanks for your reply and greetings from Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Can. where it is 2 deg. below freezing and trying to snow.

Bob, hello up there in Canada! Greetings to you from Central Texas where it is 66°F and I have to start wearing long-sleeved shirts now. Brrr! :-)

I'm not finding a lot of good information about your system at HP. Here is the support page:

I found a document that says "select" models have a media card reader on the left side near the front. It takes SD, MMC, MS, and several other types of removable flash cards. On many PCs, these media card readers are attached via USB (or other) inside the system where you can't see it. That would explain the presence of the F: and G: drives if you do have the card reader.

Hi Scott, I've got it figured after many re-boots. It IS my printer that is showing up as a USB mass storage device even though I have no idea why. For months I have been using a 4 port USB hub and never had this problem. Two weeks ago I gave the hub to my landlord because I didn't really need it. My printer has been plugged directly into my laptop since then and it now shows up as a mass storage device or a removable disc.

I still don't know why but I can live with it.

By the way, I work for Encana Oil and Gas about 1400 km north of here. I say this because I know Encana has some oil rigs drilling in Texas right now. I'm home on days off now but e-mail me if you care to and I'll send you some pics from up north.

Bob, if that 4240 printer of yours is an HP C4240 Photosmart All-In-One, then it has a media card reader built into it. That would explain why you get those removable drives showing up when the printer is connected. Here is the info page:

I have an Epson Stylus Photo All-in-One and it also has a media card reader that shows up in Windows as a removable drive.
