My computer was slow, so I used Crucial to scan it & I only had 256mb of ram. I ordered two 512 mb sticks & installed them, but it only shows one 512 mb. I have checked both sticks in both slots & the slots & sticks check out ok, when putting them in one at a time, but with both in at once it just shows one. Any help is appreciated.

Can your machine handle 1024?
What is your machine/motherboard?

As much as I always recommend Crucial. Can we double check?
A system running only 256 must be a bit old (presuming you are running Windows)

I have a print out here from Belarc, which says main circuit bd. is ECS K7S5A 1.0. Is that it?

It appears you have 2 types of slots. Is the memory all in one type?

There are two slots SDR 1 & 2, this is where the 256mb was. Then the next two are labeled DDR 1 & 2. The new sticks I ordered were DDR PC 3200 & this is where I seated them.

fent623, and Lighthouse
(FROM MANUAL)
Memory Support
Two 168-pin DIMM slots for SDRAM memory modules
Two 184-pin DIMM slots for DDR memory modules
Support SDRAM up to 133 MHz /DDR up to 266 MHz
memory bus
Maximum installed memory is 1GB
Notice: You can NOT use SDRAM and DDR simultaneously.

Ensure that memory is (Unbuffered). Also there is probably a Bios Update.

Rick P.

Rick thanx, Ok I have both sticks in the DDR slots & nothing in the SDR slots so I'm ok there right, the Crucial order states these are unbuffered sticks. Now how do you update Bios?

Lighthouse,

RTFM (LOL) (LOL).
Went to the Link you visited and then went directly to ECS.
Downloaded old PDF Manual from ECS Archives.
I have built strictly (ALL) Asus custom since 1993 so these other MBs are new to me (LOL).

Kindest Regards,
Rick P.

Check in the bios to see if any configuration is needed. And/or
As both sticks work, I would try cleaning out the slot that hasn't been used before, with a squirt of (good quality) electrical contact cleaner.
A 5 second burst, up and down the slot. Leave it for an hour, then try again.

Follow Lighthouse's instructions FIRST !!!

Also, I would (STRONGLY) suggest you contact Crucial and confirm your memory (BEFORE) following the below instructions. They may have just shipped you the wrong memory ??

Click Link Below. Fill-in (4) Drop Down Boxes for your particular MB. Download the Manual, Bios File for your MB, and Flash Utility File. Please (CONFIRM) your MB version and CPU Socket 462 by opening case and reading versions directly from MB. Read Link on ECSUSA site on how to use flash utility. After you have downloaded files, understand flash utility instructions, prepared a floppy and are ready to flash bios, post back (BEFORE)(BEFORE) you flash bios.

(CAUTION)(CAUTION)(CAUTION)

Flashing the Bios on old MBs if done (IMPROPERLY), (WILL) (WILL) (DESTROY) (DESTROY) your computer.

I don't think they shipped the wrong memory, because when I put them in one at a time it always shows, 512 mb. in both slots. I will try contact cleaner. Thanx

fent623,

Go to the link in my above post. I changed it a bit. Believe you have MB version 1.0A. or 1.1 Click on page link (How to confirm MB version). Confirm your MB version by following instructions in linked page.
