This is a pretty elementary question no doubt. I've replaced this computer recently, put out in garage to take apart in spare time. I've attempted to turn it on, and NOTHING happens; this was stored in clean environment for 2 mths and working last time I used it (2 mths. ago). Not sure if it's a power supply issue or what. What type of troubleshooting can I do here ? Really just want it for spare back-up computer, nothing more.

Model: Compaq Presario S3000NX

Thank you....

Hi there, this may sound silly but, make certain there is power at your wall outlet(receptacle),then check to see if there is any kind of light glowing inside the computer. You'll have to take the side cover off the machine to see,not a big deal.Let me know,ok?

Sparky, Yes I've checked all the obvious power choices (cord, surge protector, etc.). There is no light on outside of computer and nothing going on inside as I've taken the panel off. Thinking it's power supply and now need to figure out if I have one in another computer I can just swap to see if that's issue. Not sure if power supplies are computer specific.

Typically in this case the power supply is probably dead, although there's a smaller chance that the motherboard died and won't allow the power supply to turn on.

Most power supplies are ATX, so you can replace it with a similar ATX power supply as long as it has the same connectors (most should). Make sure you replace with a power supply of a similar wattage. (350W, 400W, etc)

Ironically my power supply died just a few days ago, I went through the same steps and ended up having to buy a new one.

I imagine there's no way of testing the power supply besides replacing with another one? I have another spare computer here and will check to see if compatible to swap and check if that's the reason.
