I use a Vista Home Premium with sp2, My security is up to date. I ran the 'check disc'
yesterday and everything was fine. Today I ran 'sfc /scannow' and it was unable to fix
2 corrupted files it found. The files were 'cbs.log' with 10,274kb and 'cbs.persist.log'
with 51,248kb.

What are these 'cbslogs'? How did they get corrupted? How can I fix them (without going into the registry - if possible)? Should I be concerned? Can I safely delete them??

I am sorry about all of the above questions - and - I do thank you for all of your help.

CBS.log is where the SFC stores the result of the scan. You can look at it with this cmd command:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log

Here it is,
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
Open it in Notepad.

Thank you - but I am still wondering if they are important? How I can fix them? How did
they get corrupted? Can I just delete them?

Thank you for your help

No. They are the logs telling you which files are corrupted, so you can fix the problem.

Did you actually look into the log with the command I posted?

Yes I did look at the log - but - it did not make any sense to me. At the very end it
indicated that they had been verified.

Should I be concerned about them - could I just leave them be?

Would it help to restore my Vista through either my backup or System Restore?

Thank you for your helo.

Any corrupt system files are a cause for concern. Can you think of anything you did before the 2nd sfc scan ? Install, or update anything or visit a dodgy website ?

This was the 1st time I did the sfc scan. In the last month though I did uninstall McAfee, installed and then uninstall Avira - and re-installed McAfee -- could that have done it? Thank you again for your help!

Okay - I deleted the cbs.log and cbs.persist.log. Then I emptied the recycle bin (to get
rid of then completely. I then did another sfc /scannow - and - those 2 logs were back!!
Now what? Thank you again for your help.

Every time you run the System File Checker, it creates these logs - that is completely normal. What seems to be the problem?

Now you have to analyse the cbs.log, using the info in the MS link I posted before.
