Can someone remind me how to open the cbs.log created by an sfc /scannow. I thought to remember that it works with Notepad, but I got "Access denied".

It does open with Notepad ? Have you got any security that is locking it down ?

Any help http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228/en-us

Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

I got it. But I used this command:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

That put the log file right on my desktop. Thanks again for all the help. Now have a job to repair a few.

crikey whs, I just give it a click, and it opens in Notepad. No idea what you have going on there :)

Yes, it's a notepad document that ends up on the desktop. Nothing really mysterious if you read the command.

OK. But I don't see how you get "Access Denied" in the first place ?

Try the command,
attrib C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

What are it's attributions ?

If I remember rightly, I had the same problem as whs, I think I managed to open it in the end by "Taking Ownership". Although knowing me, that was a bad idea :-P .

It should throw out something like this,

A I C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

There is a big gap between the A and I, and a smaller gap between the I and C:\..................

Right, the A was there too and there was a gap. But no I. A C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
PS: the posting deleted the gap. It was 12 spaces long.
