My bf's laptop has XP on it. It has multiple user accounts, one being the admin. Well recently he tried to make my own user account on his laptop. It worked fine and everything until this morning. He turned the laptop on, and suddenly the admin account was gone. It wasn't listed on the first page with all the other user accounts. I don't remember doing anything to make it go poof and neither does he, but something must have caused it. So he goes in and goes to control panel and then onto user accounts and it isn't listed there either. It still exists, however. We know that. All the files saved in it are still on the computer. He tries to create a new user account named admin and it even says an account already exists with that name.

Now my questions are these:
What could have caused the admin account to disappear from the login page?
How do we get it back onto the page?
Or ~ How do we log into it without it being on that page?

Thanks!

krissyg89,

Start machine in SAFE MODE by pressing key F8 during start up.

What do you see and what happens when you try to log-in ??

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList and create a new key with the name Administrator of type REG_DWORD
The field value data should contain 1
