I have two partitions C(primary), D(extended) and unallocated space.

Picture:

Now when I right click on unallocated space and select new partition, extended and logical are greyed out!

Any ideas?

dollar, you can only have one extended partition in XP with NTFS and a basic disk. The information in the "Description" box of the New Partition Wizard that you show above mentions this. However, within the extended partition you can have many logical drives.

From you Disk Management screen, we can see that you already have an extended partition which is shown by the green outline box. Inside that extended partition, you have 1 logical drive, (D:), which uses up the entire extended partition. Here are the choices available to you:

1) Create a primary partition in the unallocated space
2) Expand the extended partition into the unallocated space, then create a new logical drive in the available space
3) Using partition manager software, move the extended partition and D: drive to the end of the disk, then expand the C: partition into the unallocated space.

Option 1 can be done with the New Partition Wizard. Option 2 could be done with the diskpart utility or partition manager software. Option 3 can only be done with partition manager software. For software, you could use Partition Magic or preferably something newer by Easeus or Paragon. You should always have a backup of your essential data. This is especially important before doing partition operations which can wipe out whole partitions or disks if it should go terribly wrong.

dollar,

To go along with with ScottW's post.
---
TIP:
1. PLAN and Structure Hard Drive Geometry FIRST using 3rd Party Software or PEs, THEN load O/S(es).
2. Don't fool around with Extended Partitions; Construct All Primary Partitions.
3. You can always convert FAT32 Formats over to NTFS by Using Convert Command at a later time.

Above procedure is amended when making Raid Volumes Sets as discussed yesterday in another topic.
