Probably something basic but I need help please. Have been using nero 7 for over a year and burning dvd's with no problem. Suddenly I am getting error messages that "burn process was un successful". Then switched to Ashampoo where it will not accept any files. "Internal error " message comes up. Have no problems with audio files.

wilsm, how big is the .avi file that you are trying to burn? When you say burn process was aborted do you get any additional info why? You could try a program called CDBurnerXP http://cdburnerxp.se/ it´s a free and pretty good!!

.avi file is 740mb. Too big for cd disc. Would it have anything to do with codecs?

Codecs are ways of encoding/decoding digital data, they won´t have anything to with the burning of a file. It the file a film? What are you trying to burn it to, a DVD?

The files are films/concerts. It will not let me burn any .avi files, only mp3 music. I am trying to burn it to a dvd-r disc the type of which I have always used. It is only in the past couple of weeks that this has happened.

wilsm, codec packs can cause big problems. If you have any of those, uninstall them. I have seen many problems fixed by this simple step.

When using Nero to burn .avi files to DVD, I would use Nero Vision, select Make a DVD-Video, add the .avi file(s), do the menus, test it with a Preview, then finally burn it. Is this how you are doing it? How far do you get?

@ScottW, (I stand corrected!!) I thought codecs would be embedded in the .avi file never realized that a codec package could get in the way of actually burning!! Maybe because i´ve never had such problems, so why do they conflict with burning suites?

madmacs, I have not seen a situation where a codec pack interfered with CD/DVD burning software. However, I have seen all manner of video related issues clear up with codec pack removal. For more of my preaching on the evils of codec packs, read through this thread:

Also, codecs are not embedded in a video file. It's an interesting idea, though! It would be nice, but not practical.

ScottW, have done as you suggested. Film plays in preview, and it is telling me the burn time is approx 4 hours. I'll let you know in four hours what happens.

wilsm, 4 hours seems too long. Even a 1x DVD burn should only take about an hour.

Another thing that you might try is to write the DVD to your hard disk first. On the Burn Options page, choose "Write to Hard Disk Folder". This will separate the transcoding process from the burning process. Writing the DVD files to the hard disk folder will go very quickly once the transcoding is complete. Then you can use Nero Burning or Express to create a DVD Video project from the files on the hard disk. This second step will only involve disc burning and can be repeated until the burn is working.

With the files on the hard disk, you can view the DVD with ShowTime.

ScottW, you are right. The actual process took over 6 hours but was successful. However a different film I tried to burn was started at 3pm and I got a burn process failed dialogue box at 10pm along with a message that a failure log was created and do I want to keep it. I did but makes no sense to me.
Will now try your second option and I'll let you know how it goes.

Tried 2nd option and made no difference. Still a 6 hour + transcoding operation. Might try to uninstall Nero software and reinstall.

wilsm, the 2nd option was the "Write to hard disk folder", correct? You say that it took 6+ hours, but did it actually finish? Are the DVD files on the hard disk in a VIDEO_TS folder?

Now I'm wondering if the 6 - 7 hour process is the problem. Did it used to go faster? Depending on the quality of the source and output, transcoding can take a long time, especially on a slow system.

Copy the text from the output log and paste it at http://htg.pastebin.com/ and I'll take a look at it.

ScottW, the computers had it! Crashed and lost everything. Will have to rebuild and take it from there. Thanks for your help.
