Okay this is normally a simple thing to do ,however lately something changed on my XP. Here's what's going on .Let's say I download something from online.i.e. a movie clip or music file.I always download to the desktop. I usaually like to right click the file/folder and rename it. Every time I do,a window pops up saying "If you change a file extension the file may become unusable,Are you sure you want to change it?" Now this happens even if I don't down load something for the internet. An example for you to try is right clicking the desktop and scroll down to "new zip folder". Once it's there, normally you should be able to right click it and cange it's name. If I do so it does become unusable. Some setting has changed and I can't find the problem.Help Please!

Hi AST,
The problem is that the hide extensions for known file types check box has been unchecked. Tick that box and you won't face the problem anymore.
Here is how you do it -
1. Open a new explorer window (open My Computer for example)
2. Click Tools -> Folder Options
3. Click on the View tab
4. Scroll down in the advanced settings window and you will find the check box - hide extensions for known file types
5. Tick that box
6. Click OK and you are done!
