I got a copy of CyberGhostVPN today with a 1 year premium account (10GB traffic a month) and everything has installed fine. The driver has been set in Kapersky to be allowed to do anything and i have also allowed all TCP/UDP connections from the program, but it just wont connect to it´s own server. I´ve waited for up to 15 mins and nothing happens!! Have even temporarily completely turned Kapersky off, still no luck... Anyone know where other problems could lie? Help appreciated

Cannot make CyberGhostVPN make a secure connection
(5 posts)Madmacs, I've never heard of this, but I found their website easily enough. Did you try the free version first? The editor's at c|net say they could not get it to connect either:

Maybe you can get your money back. Also, I'm not sure that I understand the appeal of this product. All of your internet traffic goes through them, so they can see *everything* that you do. I don't see how this will guarantee your privacy or security. You are literally paying someone to perform a man-in-the-middle attack on your Internet connection!
ScottW, thx for your reply must have just missed your posting!! They seem to be a pretty highly rated firm here in Germany, and I got the software for free with a monthly magazine i read here. They got a so called TüV award here meaning that they´re a trusted company normally. I just thought it would be an extra shield against viruses, zombie attacks etc. etc. (No i´m not completely paranoid, lol) Or am I wrong in thinking that?
Madmacs, here is the English language page that I'm looking at:

Their primary claim is anonymity. Since you have a secure VPN connection to them, the IP address assigned to you by your ISP is hidden. So, your connection is basically proxied by them, hiding your real IP address. That will prevent someone from logging your actual IP because they will see the CyberGhost server's IP address instead. There is a lot of anonymity in that, but by no means 100%. When you run your browser, you are not immune to tracking cookies, XSS, SQL injection and a host of other tricks that *might* be tracked back to you. Here's a fun trick to try. Visit a site that identifies your IP with Cyberghost off, then with it on. For example:
http:\\whatsmyip.org
They also claim faster website access using compression, which I don't understand. Also, they claim to act as a firewall, but those are widely available and one is built into Vista. It seems to me that you could accomplish the same thing with Vista's firewall, OpenDNS servers, and a proxy.
Notice that they don't make any claims to protect your from viruses or zombies. It's good that they are a trusted company, because they could theoretically log everything you send through their networks including usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, and so on. I'm too paranoid to trust any 3rd party with all of my security!
