i got my new laptop yesterday, i hadn't played with it for long before i decided i need to get vista off of it or i'd throw my nice new laptop out a window. i've found the drivers that i'm going to need, surprisingly most of them are on the sony website under a section called "switching operating systems" but i'm having the same problem as a lot of people with the SATA/RAID recognition during the setup process of xp. i've followed the instructions on this thread

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto.....tallation/

right up until the point were it tells me to pick drivers out. i'm not sure which ones to pick out. i've searched through the device manager to find some numbers that match the ones listed in nlite but i haven't found any. i'm fortunate enough that i can ask this question from my desktop pc while my lap sits and waits for me to figure it out.

can someone help me please

paulg,

Welcome To HTG.

You need the Vaio nr388e/s Mother Board Make and Model so you can get the correct Chipset Drivers.

I can't find any info on the Canada (BC) Models from the Sony Site.

Please send me a link to where you found your Machine Drivers.

It is not uncommon for folks not to ask about a machine's specs before they purchase the machine.

Kindest Regards, (Waiting)

paulg,

Congratulations on winning the Viao prize.

The Sony Link you provided has detailed instructions for downloading the proper XP Chipset Drivers and and installing them during machine conversion.

The Chipset Driver download is in the upper right hand corner of the instruction page link.

This will be your problem.

Clicking on the file after download makes a floppy with the chipset drivers on it and probably you don't have a floppy drive - right ??

There are other ways so let me download the file and try to (extract) the drivers.
============================
EDIT: ALL needed Chipset Divers (WILL EXTRACT) from the Sony File so you can include them in The Geeks-How-To using Nlite Free software.

Very Nice of Sony !!

Post back as to your situation.

yeah, i have no floppy drive. i thought this nlite custom install disk would be the way to go. i've run the exe which extracts the files then when nlite asks which drivers to install i was a little confused as to which one i should pick. upon doing a little more research i think i've found the correct ones so i'm burning the custom install disk now.... maybe i'll get lucky.

thanks for your help so far, i'll post again in after i retry the install

i think i'm in business, i got to the point where i could choose the partition and it's currently formatting. it was the "Intel(R) 82801 HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M)" for anyone else with the same problem... after the install is complete and xp is(not) functional i will post again with the results.
thanks again for your help

paulg,

GREAT !!

You appear VERY competent in your skills.

Also remember you can slipstream (XP (SP3) into your build.

After you make one good disc, then you experiment and make a full slipstream XP3 later.

Post back as to your success.
===================================
EDIT: Thanks paulg, I need those SONY Specs as they are hard to get.

I am reading this thread as I am in exactly the same position, with a new Vaio VGN-NR21J laptop (in the UK).(and wanting to convert from Vista to XP Pro x64)
Fine instructions on using nlite, but it is the guidance on which driver(s) I need which is so hard to come by. Have been into the Intel site looking at 965 chipset options - but all seem to mention RAID, which I am advised to keep well away from. Help, comments ?
I have followed the link to the sony site mentioned about 3 messages back, and my model is not mentioned on the list.
Thanks,
Nick

PS from Device Manager I have the following details of my pc components:
Disc Drive: Fujitsu MHY2200BH
Display Adaptor: Intel 965 Express Chipset Family
DVD/CD-ROM: Matshita DVD-RAM UJ870QJ ATA device
IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller:
ATA Channel 0
ATA Channel 1
Intel 82801 HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller
Intel ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage controller - 2850

I should also add that when I tried to load XP straight from the disc I ran straight into the problem described and illustrated on another thread: ie the missing Hard Disc Drive issue.

Any advice welcome !

ndt228,

Welcome to HTG.

The Intel Chipset supports Raid if you would like to configure a machine that way.

Otherwise, the Intel Chipset will support other configurations also with the same drivers.

it's all worked out. the drivers supplied by sony worked perfectly i'm just downloading my windows updates, it's all good. i've got a couple question marks in my device manager under network controller and mass storage devices, although they work just fine, with some fine tuning i'm sure i cna even make those go away...

IT CAN BE DONE!

paulg,

WELL DONE !!

Download the rest of the Device Drivers now to a USB memory stick.

Click on a Device with a Question Mark and when ask for the driver location, choose the The USB stick and let the machine find the correct driver.

(Have left out the details as I'm sure you know the routine)

When you get your machine just right, stay with us at HTG and help with questions.

You have no idea how many we get per day concerning exactly what you just succeeded in doing.

AGAIN, WELL DONE !!

I wish things were going as well for me in the UK ! I am stuck at the stage of trying to create an functional ISO file on DVD. I have gone through the process of using nLite as per instructions, based on my std XP Pro disc (i just pointed nLite to the disc in the drive and it appeared to copy everything ok - though it is SP1). I then moved on to insert the driver, using the same one mentioned above, (which appears to match my hardware requirements based on Device Manager)(I have the Vaio VGN-NR21J), then proceeded to creat an image of the ISO, then burnt it to disc. So far so good apparently.
However, when I attempt to boot from the disc (having changed the BIOS to prioritise the drive on start-up), although the disc spins, it does not lead straight into the screens I see when working directly from the XP Pro disc itself. Instead, after a bit of a delay, Vista boots normally.

Can anyone confirm that nLite works OK in the Vista environment ? It all seemed fine, although I was surprised at how long it took to write the files from the XP disc to the temporary folder - 20+ minutes.

My other option appears to be give up and get a USB floppy drive as there are instructions on the (Canadian) Sony support page related to the driver download that explain how to use it (F6 to install 3rd party SCSI or Raid driver)

Any advice welcome
Thanks
Nick
An update: Have now been through the same process of ISO file creation on a different pc, working under XP. The process of reading and copying the XP install disc to the temp folder certainly seemed faster, but everything else was much the same - and so was the end result. The laptop does not "boot" from the disc I made by burning the new ISO file to disc. Arrgh.

OK Here is the latest news: I managed to locate a USB external floppy drive, and copied the contents of the Sony download to it. In the bios of my laptop I had to make the external floppy drive a "bootable" disc, in order that the drive could be accessed during XP set-up. All seemed to go well, I was prompted to select the driver, and chose the same one mentioned above by paulg (82801 HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M)" ).
However: next screen message told me that the following device driver will not work correctly on this computer: \iastor.sys.
The device driver is not compatible with the x64-based version of windows your computer is running.

PaulG: what version of XP did you succesfully instal last night ?

And the latest....I now have Win XP x64 resident on my pc and am in the process of updating drivers etc. The key to getting this far was to download a file from intel named f6flpy64, which contains 64 bit drivers for 64-bit XP. As mentioned above I was able to access the driver files during the install from within the std XP install disc, as I had a USB floppy drive. However, I should mention that none of the driver options matched as closely in name to that above wrt the original Vista Device Manager name. I used one called Intel ICH8M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller, and the install package accepted it.
This enabled me to move slowly through the install, but I found that my network was inaccessible and it took a new driver download/install, run through another pc to get me on-line through the laptop.
I am presently backing-up prior to install of SP2, and once I have completed updating through windows update I will use a driver manager program to see if there are any others I could usefully get.

Hours later.....most components seem to be working, and I have been through all the updates, security patches etc. Hopwever one thing I have not managed to fix:
The screen is a 15.4" WXGA (1200x800) LCD, but the "standard VGA Graphics Adapter" reports that it "cannot start - (Code 10)" under the "general tab" of device manager, and what I see on the screen (properties) has a maximum resolution of 1024x768 - which fails to fill the screen by about 1 inch to left & right. I have found and executed .exe files for installation of the INtel Chipset driver and the graphics media accelerator, both XP compatible, without benefit.
Searching on "WXGA" & drivers has got me some hits, but they seem specific to certain motherboards (eg as if a desktop PC. Can they be used elsewhere ?
Comments please ?

ndt228,

I just saw your post !!

My deepest apologies for letting you walk through this process alone.

Your postings are long so give me some time to read and catch up.

I have to know what Mobile Express Chipset Family is on your machine.

Can you trouble shoot using these pages.

I think???? it is a 965 BUT I AM NOT SURE because I don't have numbers on back of machine.

Firstly, no worries about the delay; I think there is a time-zone difference between us anyway.

In order from yr suggestions:
1)Intel Instructions: Graphics Accelerator: Rt click on the desktop does not deliver a Graphics Properties option. However, it doesn't do that on my 32-bit XP desktop machine either - however it has ATI catalyst control centre installed though, so perhaps that overwrites it ?
Device manager: as reported last night, it does not appear to have an INtel graphics driver/controller installed - despite my attempting to do this (more than once).
(My personnal gripe is that almost all the downloads are self-installing .exe files - all I can do is run it and hope, rather than it being a specific (list of) driver files to which I could point the device manager file update option and see what happened. I should also mention that I have run Driver Detective on my laptop know, and although it found a few updates, and identified the same problem with video controller, it could not fix it.

However - I have just had one "last" try at downloading the latest driver from the Intel site. It wants a reboot after installing, so I'll have to send this this note before knowing what has happened !
Pls find below the full listing from cpuz....sorry its long, but it will save time if there is anything else to check on. The chipset is GL960, which matches the Intel spec sheet for driver. here's hoping !

HOORAY !!!!!
This time it worked - I now have full-screen desktop, device manager shows Intel 965 Express Chipset Family display adaptors installed. Clearly the version available on the Sony (Canada) site (6.14.10.487) did not work for me (32-bit perhaps ?) Version 14.34.4.64.4964 (6/27/08) has installed correctly. Hope this may be of use to someone else !

This leaves me with a "Mass Storage Controller" and "Modem device on High definition Audio Bus" plus "unknown device" which still need drivers. Not a crucial issue to me (yet). I will post again if I find a solution to any of them.

Thanks again, you have enabled me to fix the main issue.
Cheers
Nick

PS CPUZ is a really neat program, thanks for that too.

ndt228,

GREAT !! GREAT !! GREAT !!

I told you I was "betting" that your machine had a 965 Chipset in it (LOL) (LOL).

Hardware has NOT changed for several years.

Only MS and the Computer Vendor OEMs want you to "think" it has with "advertising".

This old Asus I'm running this morning has a 965 Chipset and it is over (3) years old !!

Now we just have to identify the other devices on the mother board.

One Big Issue is that you are running the 64 Bit O/S.

If you had put in the 32 Bit O/S, things would be simpler as even most new computers don't run the 64 Bit version of even Vista.

Will get back to you with another program.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.....we had a "spare" copy of XP Pro, bought by mistake a couple of years ago. This looked like the right time to use it......but little did I know !
I only hope that having got this far, I don't find that some of the apps I am used to using in std XP won't work in the 64-bit environment. If I ever have to go back, at least I will have a better idea of how to do it. Something I'd recommend to anyone thinking of an OS change would be to run cpuz first and print out the results for reference later. It is so much quicker than groping about in Device Manager, even if it doesn't give you everything that can be found there.....

For comparison, my wife has just wiped Windows and put Linux (ebuntu ?) onto her laptop. It took about 2 hours in all, including a re-start after a cat walked over her keyboard at a senstive time !

Cheers, and thanks for being there
