I had a go at burning some tracks to a cd (rw) today. It didnt work. I formatted the disc then selected 3 tracks (mp3 format) i used the vista 'burn' facility found at the top of the music folder window. They play on the pc but not ön my stereo. Any advice?

Could just be a codec issue, check to see what file formats your stereo supports and convert your files to that format for burning.

Also, some home stereos and especially car stereos will not play CD-RW discs. Use a CD-R instead.

For quick easy burning you can always use Realplayer. It's a nice easy to use interface as well.

But Realplayer is a monster. I would not let it invade my system. How about Real Alternate instead?

Yup..hate realplayer. I use real alternative. I still cant find a format that will play on the hi-fi, so maybe its because its re- writable. Or because i formatted the disc. dunno. Past caring now :)

And don't forget to close it, stereo cd players can't read disks that are open.

I've never used this "Burn" button at the top of the file Explorer. When I click on it, it does nothing. I'm pretty sure I disabled Vista's built-in CD/DVD burning because I have Nero and other apps to do this job.

Does this Burn button in Explorer make a Data disc (ISO 9660, UDF) or a Music disc (Redbook)? If it just copies the MP3 files to a data disc, of course that won't play in a stand-alone CD player unless it supports MP3 playback and can read the file system. In that case, Windows Media Player would be the way to create an Audio CD from MP3 files without any additional software.

Personally Realplayer never bothered me. I have it set so that it doesn't start up with my computer and I have it set so that when I close it it shuts down the process as well. It never bothered me but I suppose that there are better ways for burning CD's, I've just never had to find one because Realplayer has always worked for me.
