Okay, i read the tutorial on how to build your own pc, and although my computer parts are not brand new, they all came from a computer that was running. i hooked everything up the way it said. i used the harddrive from the pc i'm on now along with the cd burner, which both obviously work. i plugged it into the monitor im using now, and turned it on.
Now my problem started. My pc turns on, and the green lights on the front of the case stay on. The harddrive acts like its starting up, then dont do anything afterwards. the computer does not beep. The ram/power supply, and motherboard all came from the same computer i know for a fact worked. Nothing shows up on my screen. the computer just sits there, with the fans going, and the lights dont flicker or anything. someone told me this may be a video problem. i do have a video card, but i still believe i would hear the hard drive loading up as i do now on this computer with the same. If anyone knows how to fix my problem it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would also like to add, i do have a graphics card, but i figured it wouldnt work if the onboard graphics wouldnt work. Could this be the problem? I have to use parts from this computer so a swift answer would be nice. thanks again

JOKERinc hi. Can you get into the BIOS ?
You can use the graphics card, but you should disable the integrated one in the BIOS.

Don't you just love computers! First off you'll need to take the system down to the bare basics:
- unplug the computer from the power.
- remove RAM.
- remove hard drive.
- remove optical drive (DVD).
- remove graphics card and use the onboard gfx.
- reset the BIOS (refer to motherboard manual, usually with a jumper [no, not a woolly one]).

So now you just have the motherboard, CPU, onboard GFX and power. Turn the computer on.

What happens now? It should beep as there is no RAM. If it doesn't beep then either
- you don't have a speaker attached to the motherbord (you need to get one).
- you've fried your CPU or motherboard.

If it beeps then power off, plug in RAM and power up.
- you should now see the BIOS screen complaining that there is no hard drive attached.

Plug in hard drive, power up... where we at now?

i have a new case comming today and i will transfer everything to that one. it has a speaker for the motherboard in it so i'll let you know. just be patient as i want to do this right. also, its an hp motherboard in a compaq case, and the cable for power/lights and all fit, but im not for sure if there in the right place or not. also another reason i have this case comming. I cant get to bios because i simply cant get a screen to show up, but hopefully it will beep for me. fingers crossed. I'll reply when i have this done.

Hp = Compaq = HP, they are one and the same. See if you can find the manual for the motherboard, that will show you where the lights need to go.
