I have at least three old pc and I was wondering if I could pull parts from two of the pc and add to the third pc. Like harddrive, memory & cards. All three run windows xp. Oh, one is a dell. I am doing this until I save enough money to build a new one.

Puregeek welcome. Certainly you can. As long as all the bits are compatible. I myself am running a machine that I put together out of various computers I found that had been thrown away (all between 5 and 10 years old). It runs Vista too.
Any questions I, for one, would be very happy to answer.

Thanks LH. What about the Dell, will it be a problem?

If you post here, all the different bits you want to put together, we can go from there.
Dell is no different to any other computer, so not a problem.

@LH
I built my server out of "Old" hardware - About 14 months old that is.

Hi Puregeek. You could also sell the spare Windows XP DVDs and licences from the two donor machines, as they are quite sought after. Should help you toward a new machine nicely.
Are all the computers from within the same millenium? <JK

Hi, I had a HP computer with Vista crash. I was able to remove the hard drive and put it into an external drive and wipe it clean. Now I re-installed and the machine turns on ok. I bought a new monitor and was hoping to use either my Vista rescue disk to reinstall the Vista OS or install a XP. But when i turn the machine on, the only thing I get on the montitor is the little sign for the monitor (LG) and then i get a message saying "Analog power saver" then it goes blank.
Someone said I had to get into the bios but cant figure out how. I tried turning it on and using the Esc, F2, and F8 keys on different attempts.
What am I doing wrong?
thanks for any help

Hi rlambert3, welcome to HTG. Could you please post your questions in a new topic as it is considered rude to hijack someone elses thread and you will receive more attention. Thx, Matt
