building an ubuntu computer

this is my first try at building a computer. i have the box, which i just repainted from a dirty ivory to metalflake charcoal. also i have an extra 120 gig sata hard drive an ati 2400 graphics card, and maybe a gig of ram around here some where. i want to run ubuntu on this. i need to know if the motherboard i picked out and the dvd writer will work and will what i already have will all work together:

This is a HARD one.

Personally, I would purchase an EQUIVALENT Asus MB with an Intel Chipset.

I know what you are trying to do price wise, but I just don't trust off-brand products from Tiger Direct.

Try http://newegg.com and see what you can come up with.

Believe that board is around $50 bucks at Newegg so that tells me a lot about it.

EDIT: Couldn't even find it when I went back to take another look again for you.

If price doesn't matter.

Line up by features and the future.

I look for:

Fastest and future memory DDR2 1600 (DDR3 maybe for Future)
ICHR10 ICH9R
ATI Cross Fire (Some Nvidia cards have problems but Not Out of Evaluation)
Keep integrated WiFi OFF Board
X38 Chipset
X48 Chipset
Keep Home Theater OFF Board
.45MM Processor Support (FOR SURE)
Quadcore2 down to older Processor support
Price range $270 - $200 Sweet Spot

A Lot of Stuff to Think About.
Don't know what Asus has for Fall Line-Up ??

i already have a dell xps, i don't need another powerful computer just something to run ubuntu on. i found the computer building forum on here. i must have missed that section directly under this room :P i set up a newegg account. i just want to fiddle with this until i get bore with it.

That's the HARD part.

Didn't know what your needs are.

I would Dual Boot MS and Ubuntu.

You will never get bored but will get addicted to building your own machines (TRUST ME).

Once you crank up a Big Asus or Gigabyte Tower and Server, you will be embarrassed to even donate that Dell to a needy charity - You'll sneak it out of the house so no one will see you with it (LOL) (LOL).

lmao, thats pretty funny. but this dell was on sale, so i added $1000 in upgrades. for under $1800 i have an excellent computer and so far the closes thing i've seen to my set up is around $2500. i have dual booted ubuntu but i'd rather have it on it's own. now im just sitting here looking at my freshly painted computer box. i used automotive paint and a clear coat, i think i'm understanding the addicting part already.

Yep, you are already ADDICTED I can tell.

Just pick out something inexpensive in the Asus Line-up on Newegg and go for your first build.

With that $2500 you spent on the Dell, you could have built the best, most powerful and fastest Asus Multi-Hard Drive Raid Tower System going.

(Would Have Made The Gamers Cry) (LOL) (LOL).
