i need some guidance. I'm wanting to build a high-performance gaming machine....for around $1,000ish. Will that be sufficient? And can you suggest what i get?

The basic steps are in this HowTo.

The components are all outdated now.
Search for the latest components using the HowTo as a guide.
Suggest you look at i7 Intel CPUs and compatible Asus motherboards.
Your choice however. Read ALL Pros and Cons concerning parts.
Beware that Intel CPUs will change again shortly.
Building REQUIRES knowledge, fore-thought and a huge amount of pre-planning.
