I tried your steps to fix "bootmgr is missing" and nothing worked.
I am running windows 7 64-bit on a Gateway desktop.
Any suggestions?

If you had tried the system recovery using the desktop recovery discs and still it is not resolved, then try replacing the Hard disk. I had seen many users with the same issue and none of the steps given work.
If your computer is in warranty contact Gateway and ask for a replacement Hard disk.
