boot ubuntu from an external hard drive with vista

i've figured that dual booting from a single hard drive totally trashes the operating system and format. i was able to install ubuntu on an external hard drive but when i go to boot from the usb device in bios it says there's nothing there to boot. also the hard drive doesn't show up in my computer but it installs a driver when i turn it on.
i have vista home premium and ubuntu 8. how can i get the external hard drive with ubuntu to boot?

this is exactly the same places i went to get information about putting ubuntu on an external hard drive. but nothing is exclusive to ubuntu 8.0 and windows vista. everything is for xp and ubuntu 7.04. i'll keep looking
