Hi there, this is a topic referring to the "Install Windows XP on Your Pre-Installed Windows Vista Computer", I have a Dell XPS 730, and I followed all the steps on Windows Vista of shrinking the Drive, the fact is that on the computer I have two Drives, the first one has two partitions, one called "OS" with the "C" letter and the other one called "Recovery" with the "E" letter, the other drive has no partitions and it has the "D" letter, I also have a DVD-ROM with the "F" letter and also an All in one card reader which it takes the "G, H, I, J" letters, so what I did is that a shrink the first drive with the two partitions, to be more specific the one called "OS" with the "C" letter, then I took the "F" letter of the DVD-ROM to this new volume and the "K" letter to the DVD-ROM.
I write all this because I don't know if there's a problem in having to much drives, but my real problem is when I boot the computer with the XP installation CD, starts copying the installation files, but when it says that setup it's going to start, shows me the typical XP blue screen, without allowing me to install XP. My question is how to fix this problem and if it's not possible, how to delete the partition I've just made and join it again to the "C:" drive?

Thank you very much

If you don't have a Windows XP disc with at least Service Pack 2 on it I would suggest burning a Windows XP disc with Service Pack 2 or 3 on it. You can do this with nLite. From what I've read Service Pack 2 fixes some Blue Screen Errors.
Also while doing that you will want to add SATA drivers too if you have an SATA hard drive (most newer systems do) or you may get a no hard drives found error if the Blue Screen Error is fixed. A how to on that is at http://www.howtogeek.com/howto.....tallation/

I tried to install it with the CD of XP with Service Pack 2, I'll do it with Service Pack 3 and SATA controllers in it and I will give you feedback.

thanks

Had the same problem with toshiba laptop-- fixed it -- go into bios change hard diskSATA cont6rooller from AHCI to compatibility mode -- should do the trick -- dont forget to set up vista boot before installing xp or you won't have access to OLD vista

Hi there,

I've encountered the same problem with my XPS 730 recently purchased. The only drive inside was hooked up to the raid controller. I moved it to the connexion on the Mobo with the same result. Since I have version 1.04 of the BIOS, the AHCI doesn't exist. I have disabled the raid controller and VOILA I no longer had the BSOD.

Should be NO need running Bios in Compatibility Mode (IF) one has the Latest Bios Firmware Update and the Correct Chipset Driver running on the machine not withstanding special machine setups for running Linux.
Kindest Regards,
