Best of Breed Reference Sites
(226 posts)A useful site for some basic security tests. Scroll down to "Hot Spots" and have a look at "ShieldsUP!" and "LeakTest" for starters:
Just joined this site today, I'm gonna like it here I can tell. :) Here are a couple of my well-used links.
When I need a clue before I can begin researching an issue, I go to whatis.com. It's like tech issues 101.
Merriam-webster.com is my dictionary of choice. Easily go between that and the thesaurus, also the ability to browse the distionary pages (for when you don't have a clue). They also offer a free online toolbar so if you right click on any word on any webpage, the option to look up the definition in a separate window is part of the context menu. Very useful!
Here is a good website to see if your computer will run a certain game or not.
Here's a website that is for all computer-related articles, problems, news, views, forums, and lots of other stuff...
You can get information regarding:
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7
Mac OS X
Ubuntu
Linux
and many more...
Any guesses?
You gotta check it !
My favorite site to check for merchant ratings for online retailers is http://www.resellerratings.com
The more obvious sites, such as BizRate or BBBOnline, are probably well known since some retailers put those logos on their site. One thing to watch for is that these sites want you to use them to shop and hide the store ratings elsewhere. Here are direct links:
Store ratings at resellerratings.com
Store ratings at bizrate.com
For Malware issues, download/install/run Malwarebyte.
Before running, be sure to update for the latest definitions.
For Blue Screen (BSOD) issues, recommend PCHelfForum since this site lacks the means to attach a .dmp file and PCHF has the Experts to interpret the file and the resources for uploading the files.
For HJT issues, recommend PCHelpForum since this site lacks the Certified Security technicians for interpreting the HJT.log.
There are anumber of HJT/Malware removal sites, but I think the best is the Aumha forum.
(ScottW . . . notice I didn't list my entire favorites links for this).
