BBC video problem

Now here's a minor gem!

The BBC have a programme called Working Lunch that has a webcast (in case you missed the original). So I tried to watch it but my computer objected helfully telling me that it had stopped a popup (the actual broadcast).

Now normally when it does this it provides to option to see the popup (if you care to risk it) but not in this case. Instead it usefully says that the popup can be supressed by pressing 'control'.

However even this isn't consistant I can sometimes watch extracts (which are seperate from the full programme).

And there's more. When I can get it working (not often) there is an option to watch in full screen (as opposed to the tiny screen sitting in the corner of the screen). Occasionally this works at other times nothing happenes, or the screen goes white with the broadcast still in the tiny screen, or I lose the broadcast entirely.

Now I imagine that all of the latter is the BBC not my computer but the popup problem is extremely frustrating and would be grateful for a solution.

I gave this a go to see what was what and I chose the option for 256k or higher connection using Windows Media Player and it opened in a new tab and played without any fuss. I have Firefox set up to open links in new tabs and not in a seperate window.

I then tried it in Internet Explorer. It opened the link in a new window and and again asked me to choose my player preferences. I did the same as before and it worked the same as before. Are you using the Real Player option by any chance? I'm afraid I couldn't test that because I can't stand Real Player and don't have it installed.

Anyway, the video player window/tab wasn't blocked as a pop-up in either browser for me. Are you using any pop-up blocking software or plugins on your browser?

You guessed right I'm using Real Player, mainly because that the only choice that was offered me.

I'm using AVG and it blocks a lot of popups but always (except on this site) it offers the option to see what it is supressing.

I tried Firefox, for a day, maybe I'll give it another go.

I'll try media player too.

Thanks for your help.

OK so I'm thick. More accurately I haven't a clue what I'm doing. I've never tried using Media Player before. How do I connect with/download a programme?
Incidently I have now discovered that the popup is being blocked by the Google toolbar not AVG but I have no idea why it's doing this.

You can turn off the popup blocking in the google toolbar if you feel like it.

Hi Supermansghost (and Antman)

No thanks, some of the popups I've experienced are really persistant (ie you need to turn the computer off before they go away). On a normal commercial site you'd think they would have more sense - I might even have bought something if it hadn't been for that, now the site is on my blacklist.

Anyway, for what it's worth I no longer have a problen with Working Lunch. I can now watch the programme, unfortunately I haven't a clue what I have done so I can't report on it. Yesterday it just started working. A Sunday, could that have anything to do with it? I haven't any other solution!

Assuming you are using Firefox, when the yellow bar pops up, you can add that site to your safe list. It works the basic way in IE as well. Just click "Options".

Hi Michael (and others)

No, I'm Foxless at the moment. It's a new computer (previous one ran Windows 98 and no internet) so I'm still testing things out. I did try Firefox for a day but then decided I was having enough trouble with getting to grips with Vista.

Incidentally have a look at my new subject line on OpenOffice. You are all probably far too experienced to have a problem, but better safe than sorry.
