Should back ups of Linux distros be made, if yes what software to create & restore them?

Having not used linux for a while, I'm pretty sure there is a backup facility within your distro

Image backups are good for whatever is on the disk. Macrium can do the job for Linux as well as any other operating system., Just use the recovery disk for both backup and restore.

Can Macrium Rescue CD create back ups & restore for Linux only too, the reason for asking is that it's build on a W7 environment?

The Macrium Rescue CD does not care what is on the disk, good, bad, indifferent. It will take an IMAGE of whatever is there and will put it back exactly as is was when taken.
