I just got a warning from my AVGvirusscanner that a file is infected with a virus.
I wonder if it is true or if this is a false positive, because I have had this program for ages and I never got a warning and I have no reason to believe it has changed in any way.
How can I check if it really is a problem?

A wondering Sarah ...

Added info - this morning AVG refused to update and I got a warning I might not be protected.
Now I even I feel I should change and get me another virusscanner ...

i had superantispyware keep finding 1070 infections over and over while nothing else did. i used house calls, kaspersky online scanner, nod32, a-squared free, etc. nothing else ever found it. i found out it was a wallpaper i downloaded. nothing was ever opened so i was never really infected and i don't really have a point i'm getting at other than my coffee is kind of strong and i keep typing long boring, go-nowhere posts...

Upload those EXE files to VirusTotal and see what it reports.

SarahJames,
Most probably False-Positives because of scripts.
The old FIRST PAGE Free HTML Editor would give False-Positives because of scripting add-ons.
If you have run another scanner against your system and found nothing, I would not be too worried.
Also AVG had a bad update which is now supposed to be corrected.
If you take out AVG, there will be around +300 references to it left in your registery which should be removed.
I suggest waiting a few days and see if AVG fixes another possibly bad update.

EDIT: JonMCC33 posted before I was finished and his idea is Good also.
Kindest Regards,
Rick P.♦:)

@ OzSpitt - LOL, but it wasn't boring:)

@JonMCC33 - I tried to. One came back clean, the other I can't even upload because AVG steps in and won't let me upload. It is a completely unnecessary exe anyway, so I let is be send to the virusfault just to be free of the hassle.

I just wondered - heard so much negative info about AVG lately and this doesn't make me feel any better about it. I'll give Avast a try I think ...

Hi Rick, you're post showed up after I hit 'send post' ;-)
I've got a distinct feel I'm dealing with false positives here.
I just deleted the HTML stripper (haven't used it in like forever, so I don't miss it) and all of a sudden the gifanimator is not a problem anymore for AVG.

And ok, I'll wait a day or two (mostly because I was off to bed anyway and tomorrow is a busy day LOL).

Goodnight!
Sarah.

SarahJames,
Remember the more programs you install and un-install, the more a Clean Machine gets messed up unless you have other software to dig into the Registry manually and clean it up.
Of course as usual, the final decision is up to the user.
Kindest Regards,
Rick P.♦:)

Sarah, it sounds like you have the CoffeeCup virus. Let me google that for you...hah hah! :O

I think these false positives go in cycles. Consider these oldies:

Well, I'm done with AVG - today it said again it can't update. I'm gonna download and install Avast and see if that works better for me ...

Cheers,
Sarah.

avira runs like nod32. avast really slows a computer down almost as bad as norton. the worst part is "IF" avast tries to fix an infection(instead of block one) you'll have no control of your computer for several minutes.

Thanks guys;-)
I have uninstalled AVG and installed Avira and so far so good.
Just did a complete systemscan and I barely noticed it was running.
So I'm good:)

Cheers,
Sarah.

There are several of us on this forum that love Avira. But we are in the minority :(
