after reading numerous articles about avg on this forum, and elsewhere, it seems to me that you either love it or hate it. Ive used the latest version since it was released (though not the tool bar) After reading a lifehacker article, i found that a lot of people really like avira antivir. Does any one reading this use it?

avg or avira antivir

Also, you should be more specific on which version of AVG you are running and which version of Avira you are interested in. There is a big difference between the free versions and the full-on security suites. Here are the comparison pages for the two companies:

EDIT: changed link for Avira to include free version
You will find some useful information in the Forum Rules here:
http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/forum-faq
It says: "The number one rule is that everybody needs to be friendly." And also: "No flaming or personal attacks. This is a help forum, and people that aren't trying to be helpful will be banned."
There is also a link to an excellent MS KB article on "how to ask a question". It explains that a vague query will be met with clarification questions. For example, if someone says, "I use AVG," that person might be asked to clarify which one of the 4 different personal AVG software packages is being used.
With respect, i asked for anyone that uses it. This forum is used by thousands of people, and im hoping one or two could give me some first hand advice. I dont need a link to an a/v debate. What version? The latest free avg versus the latest antivira. Sorry for any offence caused.
I have to side with ScottW on this one. Your reply "Thanks for a useless answer" was particularly sarcastic and offensive. I don't think this board has an "ignore" function, but if it did I suspect a lot of members would put you on it.
My point is that if you want help, that kind of remark does not entice other users to give it. ScottW was just trying to help.
Yes, we all must have thick skins on the Internet, but on forums like this, particularly noted for "friendly" behavior, that kind of stuff will NOT get you much help or responses.
Lest this be construed as a personal attack or not helpful, my comments are meant to be helpful for anyone who might want answers to their questions and help.
Not wanting to perpetuate a flame war myself, I certainly will not respond here any further. It stops here.
EDIT: Mods, feel free to delete this . . . my response was not as restrained as ScottW's . . . it just really ticked me off.
fair enough. Ive posted quite a number of questions on this forum and generally have got satisfactory answers. I know people are only trying to help, but i, and many others im sure, have lots of unresolved (unsolved) problems. Too many members are too willing to jump in with an answer that isnt in line with the question. Or supply a patronising response. ie 'learn how to ask a question properly'.
