I have been running avg 8 and windows defender side by side without any conflict on vista home premium.

On Friday night 16th October I installed avg 9 which has a slightly different interface and an optimum scanning feature.

This Saturday morning I find that my windows defender has been disabled by avg and is not running anymore.

There was no mention of this happening at the avg download page.

Does anyone know if this is supposed to happen?

Hi Jenian, you should download MSSE

MSessentials

Defender can be 'deactivated'

AVG is a bit of a pain:
try COMODO, free. has to be set up but wicked.
AVG, although pretty good, has an under popup...irritating to say the least!
Hope this helps,
Mike

Hello Jenian, try to enable Windows Defender and then see if it shows any wrong message/notification.

Best wishes,
Thanks.

vistamike, Thanks for your suggestions. i tried MSSE but i dont like it , too many weird things were happening.

Shkumbin, Windows Defender enabled okay and scanned normally and there were no abnormal messages.

However after a reboot Defender was disabled again and this is just since AVG 9 was installed.

On the positive side after using the AVG optimization tool it cut my Scan Time down from 2 hours and 25 mins.

to a very fast 55 mins. I am reserving judgement at the moment though.

yes searched other forums and apparently AVG says they deliberately disabled Windows Defender for they have their own anti malware software running on AVG 9,they also claim Microsoft said it was ok, happens to me to on every reboot and have to re enable Windows Defender, and apparently there is a lot of gripping about this feature
