Well this morning an update came via windows update for my Conexant High Definition Audio Driver, along with others. When i restarted my computer to finish installing the updates, i noticed the little volume indicator in the task bar said that "No Audio Output Device is Installed". Oooh dear, i thought, and went to try doing Windows update again. When i do this, an update is available for the driver, but it fails to install (Error code 80070103). Under Windows help and support it says that i "might be trying to install a driver that is already installed on your computer or a driver that has a lower compatibility rating than one you already have installed."

So i tried to reinstall the driver through device manager, and it turns out it wasn't enabled. So i click "enable", and it goes to install, then it says "Device driver software not successfully installed". Right clicking it and going to properties, reinstalling/updating the driver both results in a message saying that my device driver is up to date.

For some reason the "Roll back driver" option is not available, and it is not listed in the windows update list of installed updates, so i cannot roll back the update. Thanks, microsoft.

So... any ideas? It would be handy to have my laptop play sounds again!

(P.S. - I am running Vista Home Premium on an HP dv6302tx if that helps)

I think it came as a program with it's own wizard and not as an update.

@whs - that link you provided worked! Thank you! I just found the driver on the HP website and installed it that way. I suppose i would need to hide the faulty windows update one now?

about those windows updates, i saw an optional windows update for my Atheros wireless card (which i believe is my wifi card), when i tried to update it, around half-way or 70% of the installation, i get a BSOD.

i'm not sure if this is part of the reason, but i was using my wifi when i installed it (i was connected to our router through wifi).

If the update is "optional", I would not bother. I never install optional updates. The reason for our BSOD could be anything.
