Another Vista SP1 article
(6 posts)From my past experiences.. I will never install any Windows updates for few weeks or even months. I agree what whs says.
When the computer is working fine.. y do you have to install some thing that is not completely tested. MS wakes up only after the issues. So, wait and watch.
I think that article was bit harsh.
SP1 may not have many things make people go wow but it does have a lot of fixes for bugs that have annoyed people.
Like:
1. Many performance problems have been corrected.
2. Many bugs that cause crashes have been fixed.
3. Little features like backing up Encryption Files and only defraging selected drives were added.
4. Reduced Functionality Mode has been removed. Now for people who's computers get deactivated due to a bug can still use their computer.
The article is also wrong about the UAC prompts. While a lot of prompts are still there it is worth noting that the amount of prompts in some situations are reduced.
"SP1 reduces the number of UAC (User Account Control) prompts from 4 to 1 when creating or renaming a folder at a protected location."

@whs: That maybe true in some cases but I don't think so here.
Parts of Vista RTM are broke and SP1 fixes those things.
Unfortunately, SP1 does bring some bugs with it but that is unavoidable.
No one can write code without bugs as humans are not perfect.
Unfortunately it's popular to bash Windows Vista, so most columnists are going to bash it as much as possible to appeal to their audience.
Much less is said about the problems upgrading Ubuntu... every time I have to upgrade it takes me at least a day to get everything working right again...
There were a lot of problems with the latest OS X upgrade... but it's not as popular to bash those.
When you consider the nearly unlimited hardware configurations that Windows runs on and the amount of software out there that runs on Windows, it's amazing that it works at all.
jd and Geek, I think you are both right. There is a lot to be said for Windows and Vista. At 55 MLOC it is amazingly stable. With the IBM OS/370 we figured 1 bug per 1000LOC (that was in the 60s to 80s). I think Vista is a lot better than that. But, as jd said, with the new SP1 code new bugs have to be expected. That's why I believe that letting it age a little does not hurt. Only crazes drink Beaujolais Nouveau and pay a lot for it, the connaisseurs wait a couple of years.
