http://filehippo.com/
Here you will find about 9 or 10 to choose from. I like VLC, Real Alternative, Winamp. Usually when you want to watch something on the web they look for WMP or Real Player (Real Alternative works like Real Player). Real Player itself is a little heavy handed.
Suggest to keep "Filehippo" in your Favorites. It's handy for all kinds of downloads.

When you download with IE look for the yellow bar on top. Right click on that and "allow download"

And whatever you download, will want to make itself your "Default Media Player". I would not allow that and keep WMP as default. Watch during the installation process and uncheck the corresponding box.

NB: What is wrong with your IE? Maybe you are just missing a Codec. What is the Mediatype of your CD files?

Yes, as whs says.

You may find it useful to try more than one and decide in time which one you like best.

Most people here will gravitate towards the Open Source players, they're lightweight and easily installed/uninstalled.

I have found that these 3. VLC, K-Lite codec pack (full) and Real Alternative will play all media types between them. And VLC does have a lovely graphic equalizer incorporated.
