In the topic This is funny, whs said I wish they had never invented cell phones. They are the greatest pain in the neck. I am definitely sure that I will never have one.

To avoid going Off Topic, I have created a new topic.
This is going to a serious discussion if possible about annoying telephone usage in today's generation and anyone can reply to with their thoughts should they feel like it.

Here is my responce to whs:
I wouldn't say that, the problem is not Cell Phones but the people who use them.
There are many people who have valid uses for Cell Phones like people that get lost in the middle of nowhere.
There are people who are friends that want to Call their friends and make plans for dinner and such.
Should you just want to make Calls and not get them fron others, you can just turn off the ringer.
I know someone who will keep his phone set to vibrate and will NOT pick up or call you back in 30 minutes in less he feels like it.
That used to make me mad when I tried to get a hold of him but now I relize why he decided to do that. Many people just call him about things that are not important to him at all so he ignores most of them.

Edit: I just saw another post point out annoying telephone usage, that merits a responce.
In the topic Puppies SarahJames said I resigned to not having a phone at all anymore - I can't beat the noise LOL LOL LOL.
While that is true, I hope you still have a phone for emergencies* like needing to call 911**.

* @SarahJames: I'm sure you do still have a phone somewhere, I'm just making a point.
** The number 911 is for the United States, the number may be different should you live in another country.

I can see a certain utility of the device for people who have a job "on the road", like an ATT service person or a travelling salesman who has to check on whether an item is in stock or so. But most of the buggers are not that type. I sit in a restaurant and want to have a "quiet" conversation with my wife - and there is is this guy who does not stop screaming into his cell phone at the next table (he must have forgotten that he has a phone). On several occasions already I have asked them to stop being a nuisance - then they look at me as if I came from the moon. Or the ladies in the supermarket that seem to come without a shopping list and need "on line" directions what to buy. That's ok if they are in anothr isle. But if they keep yelling into the thing when they are in-line behind me at the cash register, I blow my top. Already several times I have said: "Lady, can you stop babbling". I know I am rude, but so are they. And last, people who get lost on the road should not be driving - or get a GPS. At least that thing will only babble at them.

I agree, those situations are quite annoying but they all seem to have a root cause of a person who thinks they are so important that being rude is an ok thing to do when it's not.
Like most things, the device is just arangement of circuits, plastics and similar matertials, it can't be rude (causing the annoyane) itself without a person operating it.

I don't like them because of the heavy bag which one has to carry them around in and the antenna is so long.

Rick, do you still have a brick?

jd, of course you are right. It is not the wires and plastic that are rude. But it seems to invite people to be rude.

Rick, we imported a Finnish Au Pare, a gal from the land of Nokia that knows her mobile phone technology better than her smoked fish. We actually use her to carry around the heavy bag. When we want to place a call, we ask her to climb a small hill and extend the antenna as high as her body allows.

While I'm not positive we aren't breaking any laws or upsetting Finnish-American diplomacy, we certainly believe the quality of the call (and the smoked fish) is improved since Miika joined the family.

My dilemma is quite the opposite. My mobile phone is so small I've hired the services of a Black Forest gnome for search and rescue purposes. He gets in all the nooks and crannies, ground level you see.

Lets have a vote, who would you rather place your inter-stellar call?

Gnomes are more reliable.

Finns finish the chosen objective, in Finnish.

Gnomes don't distract from the chosen objective, in Finnish.

I'll vote for the Miika solution.

The bag is heavy and I might poke someone in the eye with the antenna when trying
to use the mobile telephone.

Hi Techgranny,

Yup I do have a phone, but that is a cellphone which doesn't work in the house and it is too expensive to use it a lot. Ergo, it is an 'emergency phone' LOL.
My 'homephone' broke down with the move and I was about to get me a new one, but it turns out I love the peace and quiet that comes with not having a phone. No weird calls from telephonesalesmen at the oddest hours, no calls with 'sorry, wrong number' at three AM in the morning.
And no long calls with friends or colleagues who I will see the next day anyway. (Big waste of time!)

Gotta run now;)
bye!

Sarah.

Sarah, I envy you. Wish I didn't have a mobile phone, have to though for business trips. I guess that's emergency use only:)

Well, sorry to buck the trend, but I use my mobile phone all the time. However, jd and whs, you will be pleased that I text rather than 'babble' :)

I just find it so useful - quick off the mark messages which you will receive a reply from almost straightaway (depending on who you are texting) from almost anywhere.

Miika can carry mine too if she likes...

Oma, when I am your age (that isn't supposed to be as rude as it sounds, sorry) then current technology, the new 'slim phones' and similar we will obselete, and be regarded in the same way as the above 'phone :)
