Advice on which laptop to buy

Please advise me on which laptop to buy. My needs are VERY simple:

Mostly, I use my laptop for work which requires only Microsoft Office (I could get by with Open Office if needed), and the Internet. I've had a Toshiba Satellite A 215 for 5 years, and it has been extremely reliable. I think I paid about $400 for it.

I would be okay with another one like it if there’s nothing new on the market that’s a better value. Mine has 2 gig RAM and a 32-bit Operating System with 184 gig hard drive. It has a 15 inch screen and since I'm a 70 year-old woman, I don’t think my eyes would be very happy with one that’s much smaller.

Also, I don’t need a long-lasting battery, because I’m okay being “tethered.”

But I think this one may be going, so I would really appreciate any advice about a very basic laptop that is, preferably under $500. Are there any suggestions?

Many thanks,
B.J.

Moved to the main forum. You will get more attention there.

Being a Dell enthusiast, I would go with one of their Inspiron models.

Agreed. Here's what ~$500 can buy:

A site like Techbargains will help save some extra $$.

B.J. Do you realize that all new laptops will come with Windows 8 which requires a steep learning curve. It is very different to XP, Vista or Windows 7.

And given that you are looking for a bigger screen, this $450 Dell 17 Inch may be a good option: http://configure.us.dell.com/d.....3242274942

@whs, If you Configure To Order (CTO), you can choose ANY O/S you want.

That's a good idea. I hope B.J. picks that up. Who wants Windows 8.

Unfortunately you cannot customize the 17 inch $449 model from there. It gets you to some dumb tablet configurator. Try it.
