Some of the commercial versions of the HIPS programs seem to do full registry monitoring. But you might as well use Spybot's Teatimer which will do that for free. The teatimer uses very little resource - CPU utilization is less than 0.4% (as to the Process Explorer).

Would a HIPS program do the same thing in protecting the registry from changes??

Oz, I think Rick meant PhotoBucket. Here is the procedure how to do it that I wrote up a few weeks ago:

1. Create your account at http://photobucket.com/ - real easy
2. Use the folder with your name on it or create a subfolder (recommended). You do that on the left side where it says "New Album" > Save
3.Go to "Upload Images and Videos", somewhere in the middle. Underneath where it says "Reduce to", pick 640x480 (best size for posting). Now click on "Choose Files". This will most likely bring up your "Pictures" folder (but you can select another folder). Double click on the file you want to upload. After a few seconds you will see it.
4. If you want to post this picture directly on the Forum, click on IMG Code (last link). If you only want to post the link to the picture, click on Direct link. Note: the thing will get yellow - then you got it in your clipboard (from where you Paste).
5. Now you can paste this into your HTG posting. If you chose IMG, the picture will only show up AFTER you posted - In the posting you will only see the link. If you chose "Direct link", it will just be a link.

The image has to be on a server.
Most members use "Bit Bucket".
If you care to send it to me, I'll post it off of one of my sites and of course give you all the credit plus write-up.
It's (NOT) a technical knowledge issue SO DON'T FEEL UNACCOMPLISHED.

Was going to test it but just deleted the file because of your recommmendation.

Would have caused another massive manual registry clean-up so glad I waited now.

That's one I haven't heard of before.

I downloaded but didn't install it because it is pretty late CST/USA time.

Maybe some members will jump-in on this one and we'll get some feedback.

Appears to have been around for awhile as the earlier version supported Win98 and WinME.

@ScottW,

Spywareblater has been around for a long time; kinda/Sorta the grand daddy of prevention. Basically it does what ScottW figured out using Kill Bits and CLISD's in the Registry. If you have some of the programs I have that can search the Relationships in all Registry Hives, you can search on some really nasty words and find 1000s of really gross sites in the registry that spyblaster is protecting one from.

==== One can even go to these web sites but the registry will not retain or allow to function the spyware they attempt to load. Once you clear (ALL) caches, its gone in most cases. The key word is (ALL).

@LH,
One can can (ALWAYS) edit their registry. In fact, after testing and UN-installing (ANY) program, there are (ALWAYS) HUNDREDS OF REFERENCES to the program that must be removed manually from the registry so Spyblaster has (NO) affect on manually editing the registry what-so-ever.

@ALL
I thought everyone used this program so I just was reminding Newbies where to find it. As most members know, I (NEVER) run (ANY) programs in the Background so was just giving a (Trick)/(Tip) to Newbies since we have so many questions concerning infected computers which result in so many other problems.

(DISCLAIMER)
If one hangs around on IRC and with crowd that likes to experiment with BOTs, etc..; then one can forget about Spywareblaster as one has to use other methods of protection (LOL) (LOL).

I'm getting a picture for how it works, though I don't have a single source that describes it. What SpywareBlaster does is to add known spyware sites to the Restricted Zone in IE7, adds tracking cookie domains to cookie block lists, and sets kill bits in the registry for the CLSID of known spyware ActiveX controls and BHOs. When it updates, it adds new restricted sites, cookie blocks and kill bits. It certainly works as billed -- passive protection.

The first thing that leaps out at me is that folks who don't use IE7 for their browser have a far more limited exposure to ActiveX and BHOs. Also, adding sites to the Restricted Zone in IE7 is no help for, e.g., Firefox 3 users unless there is some similar site restriction list in FF3. Also, it would be possible to get infected if a new spyware came out between updates and you happened to get it and it installed itself where the kill bits couldn't stop it. That's a lot of things that have to happen, so it's quite unlikely.

I have a vague feeling, that Spywareblaster, stops you from editing your own registry. I will try it out, but am in the the middle of setting up a new system.

@Rick, any idea how SpywareBlaster does real-time prevention without running in the background?

@1chargerfan, from reading their website, SpywareBlaster claims to prevent spyware, not find and remove it. So, I would say you should definitely use some other spyware remover software, such as Spybot S&D, in addition to this.

Spybot is a good program but has had "feature creep" over the years.

I'm not a good member to ask as I run my machines for speed only and have a regular maintenance schedule to keep them fixed.
