Thanks Scott, but I already checked the appearance settings (assuring the setting you advised). Microsoft did have a Explorer stability/compatability hotfix released 10/5, but that didn't help. It appears that Microsoft does not want to provide the option to change the default file manager in Vista.

For thumbnails, try this:
Control Panel> System> Advanced System Settings> Advanced> Performance> Visual Effects> Adjust for Best Appearance.

You may have to reboot.

Let us know if this works.

It's through "Default Programs" that you change file associations, but there is no selection for folders, etc. the way there was in WinXP. If you see anything in "Default Programs" that relates to the function of file manager or refers to Vista explorer, please let me know, 'cause I don't see it.

I recently lost the ability to view thumbnails of jpg's in Vista explorer, I cleaned the cache w/ Windows cleaner as recommended, also double checked that "~ do not view thumbnails" in folder setting isn't checked. I give up! Now I want to use a different file manager as default instead of Vista Explorer, but I can't find any way through file assoc., etc to do it. Any ideas? (I want to use Cubic Explorer or Xplorer2 lite)
