98 Was ok, i loved xp when it came out, nice look and all.
I have vista on my laptop and am getting used to it,(a few tweaks here and there to make
it less anoying). there is still some older software that just wont work. I can get new
versions that would work on vista but the ones i have work fine on xp and as i have xp
it would be nice if i could get it running.
I do have one good reason not to use vista though, Two months ago when i built it i
purchased XP to put on it, i really do not want to spend more on vista as i will need
to get ultimate to get the functionality of xp pro ( fax capability etc..)

"I dont want vista as some of my older programs wont work with it."

Lots of people keep saying this. Almost all old programs (unless they relate to specific hardware, for example PLC programming software) will work on Vista. Just because it crashes when you first load it up doesn't mean it won't work, search the internet for a patch, try the compatibility mode, use a virtual PC or even try using an emulator.

The Compatibility of Vista is nowhere near as bad as people would have you believe, in fact I would say that it is easier to get old software to work on Vista than it was on XP when that first came out, particularly with the increase in processor power these days making virtual machines possible.

As for not liking it, there is nothing you can do about that, but I suspect you were one of the people who preferred 98 to XP when that came out but you got used to the changes in XP didn't you?

I know this doesn't solve your problem but you could be making a problem for yourself here, if Vista can work why not go for it? Unless of course you are a PLC Programmer or similar and need XP for work, in which case I hope someone can come up with a solution.

I have had a problem when starting xp, i keep getting explorer error messages and others that i cant remember.
The first thing i tried was to try safe mode, exactly the same happened.
I tried going to system restore but got error messages saying it couldnt start.
I finaly gave up on it and decided to reinstall with a new hard drive.
The problem i am having now is that when i try to install xp i get the dreaded blue screen of death.
The set up goes through the first minute ok while it loads the temporary files/drivers, then it says
loading windows and then the blue screen.
I have tried a second new hard drive, new ram, a new identical graphics card and a new identical motherboard.
I tried the vista cd i have on my other pc and that installed fine.
I dont want vista as i dont like it and some of my older programs wont work with it.
Where do i go now?
Any ideas?
All the settings in bios are the same as when i first set up and installed xp a few months ago and it went
perfect then.

Error message reads
STOP: 0X0000007B (0XF78DE524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

System details
Asus Crosshair M/B
Asus EN8800GT Graphics
Athlon 64 x2 6400+ Processor
Corsair XMS Pro 1GB x2 Memory
400GB IDE HDD (also tried a different 160 GB HDD)
