My folks bought a Dell Inspiron 1521 with ATI video card and are having the exact same problem - resolution resets to 800x600 upon restart or sleep. Dell said the problem was McAfee but after uninstalling McAfee, problem still exists. Tried changing the power options with no luck. Solution would be greatly appreciated.

HI,

I also have a Dell 1420. It was ok for the past few months until recently when I start up the laptop, the resolution is set to 1024 x 768. The original resolution was 1280 x 800. I'm using microsoft 965 chipset.

Have tried to re-adjust the resolution back to orignal but no such option for it. It only gives me selection of 800x600 and 1024x768.

One thing I notice, there's no Dell logo and Microsoft logo during startup.

Can somebody help?

I have a new Dell 1420 that also goes to a lower resolution after waking up from sleep mode. It is supposed to be 1280 X 800, and the suggestion that a lower resolution is what the hardware is designed for is incorrect. If anyone comes up with a solution for the problem, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Given one day with the change I mentioned helped but did not fix the problem. It seems rather random when and why the resolution changes. I'd say it was changing 80% of the time before and less than 20% of the time now.

Next steps??

I just bought the same computer, 1420, and thought I might be able to help out. I too have the lowered resolution issue though I believe my graphics card is different. I have the Nvidia 8400 but it does the exact same thing. Reverts to 1024x768 after reopening the display (or some lesser resolution).

I did two things and it appears to have gone away for now. I've only run the system for about 15 minutes and tested it a couple times so it may come back. First I updated the drivers for the video card. Sound like you've already done this. Next I right clicked on the battery symnbol in the task tray and selected Power Options. Change the plan to the Balance setting. You may have to hit "show additional plan" to allow this option. The only thing I changed in the plan was the brightness and I'm guessing this would have no effect. Other plans other than "Dell recommended may also work".

Let me know if this works for you as well. Good luck.

I just re-read your first post, the issue is that you are using a high resolution on a laptop screen which by default is not supported on screens lower that 19inch, a 15 / 17 inch screen should only be using a max resoltion of 1024/ 768 or stretched horizontally. although you screen is able to display a higher resolution 1280, when you bring your machine back out of hibernation, your display flicks quickly to a high resolution but the refresh rate does not change accordingly.

I am afraid that the issue here is that you are trying to make your physical machine do something it was not designed for.

You should use a resolution with a horizontal not higher that 1028

Regards, AlanMcC

Hi Rahgeek

Power saving features have a nuymber of options in windows vista, to determine which please go to the control panel > PErformance information and tools > Advanced Tools

Lcoated top should be notification of what is cuasing your machine from failing to come out of hybernation correctly, the most likely cause is the driver version you are using. try locating an updated driver for you graphics card.

Regards AlanMcC

How to change the behaviour of the resolution revert back as I have tried looking in the advance setting tab under Power Options and look for the display option and could not find anything related to the resolution or settings parameter which controls the behaviour of the display settings . Please advice how to do that.

Power Options -> change advance settings -> display -> turn off display after
adaptive display
display brightness.

I am not working with the external monitor. It is the behaviour of my laptop monitor which is fuzzy. None of my friends has this edition of laptop as this has recently come in the market and I was the stupid to buy it... Sorry about the frustration..

Are you using your laptop with an external monitor?

You can try the following;

Open the Task scheduler and disable a task in it called TMM (Microsoft Transient Multi-Monitor Manager)

I think you got it now. It remains in the lowest display settings mode when I boot back from the hibernation / sleep .

But when I restart/reboot the computer fully then i can see the display settings has been set to optimal which i want i.e 1280X800.

I want it to retain the settings when I puts it in sleep/ hibernate mode as well.
