What makes it interesting is that we all seem to be in between episodes.

I am pleased to report, delighted actually, that this morning my computer seems fine so hopefully that episode is now behind me.

It's currently just after midday so I have spent the last 7 hours (okay with what I know now I could do it a lot quicker) getting rid of 2.3 and going back to 2.2.

Now I don't know for sure but since only one other person seems to have a problem (see OpenOffice forums) but I'm pretty sure this problem is limited to Vista users and probably only a few of them.

Yesterday I got alerted to 2.3 being available and thought "great" and almost immediately went to download it, via the site given, the connection failed. That should have warned me but it didn't. I went to the site and ddownloaded it myself (after all that's how I got 2.2 in the first place and until this morning everything was fine, but, when I booted this morning, no Office. All my shortcuts were dead and nothing was available internally either.

Fortunately I had kept 2.2 (and I advise you to do the same for at least the first couple of days).

So this is what to do if you find yourself in a similar fix and have kept 2.2.

Uninstall 2.3 then reinstall 2.2 and when it asks use repair (this much is on the Open Office site.

What it doesn't tell you is that you are then still left with a bunch of dead shortcuts and no obvious way of accessing Office (doing a search is no help it only finds zip files).

Go into start button search and type 'writer', it then finds Open office writer. Drag the file to the desktop and it provides a new desktop shortcut, overwriting the old dead one. Do the same with 'calc', 'draw', 'impress' and 'math' and you are back with a full set of facilities.

Finally a caveat. I haven't switched my computer off to check that the resurrection is permenant (there's work to be done). If there is a problem I can only suggest ditching everything and hunting the web for a 2.2 download.

Best of luck!
