Thanks.

I don't know why my Vista Security Center is showing the Anti-Spam as "out of date," when all updates have been made. Maybe because I have automatic updates turned off. Probably something that I will never know the answer to for now anyway.

You say your Vista is Dutch version, whereas mine was acquired here in USA.
I just wondered if maybe, someone who had USA version of Vista would show something similar (or different) in the Windows Security Center/Malware Prection/ after clicking the 'down' arrow (next to the green ON) on right side and seeing "Spyware and other malware protection" and then clicking on the third line which reads "Show me the antispyware programs on this computer," and seeing the list showing AVG AV and AVG AS status.

Hi Alicez - re #1, I meant it shows AVG Anti-Spyware = ingeschakeld (I have a Dutch version, so I think that translates to "activated").
I recommend automatic updates to keep this running smoothly.

As far as I know there are no email notifications.

Best wishes,
Sarah.

Thanks.
Re: #1-
When you say your's said "OK," did you:
go to the Vista Security Center (in Control Panel) and go down to the Malware Protection area, and then click on "Show me the anti-spyware programs on this computer?"
Mine shows:
AVG Anti-Spyware = out of date
AVF-Anti-Virus Free = ON
Spybot = Snoozed
Windows Defender = ON

P.S.How can I get e-mail notifications that someone has replied to my thread(s)?

Hi Alice,

#1 : mine shows that it is up to date and OK.
#2 : I take it it is the automatic procedure. I understand you want to keep control yourself and I don't use automatic updates for most programs (I know how you feel;-D), however with AVG I see nothing against it. It makes sure you get latest protection as fast as possible and you can't forget. So I have it set to automatic updates and would recommend you to do the same.

And now that you mention it, I haven't seen an option for emailnotification on HTG either.
Never looked for it myself. I'll have a look around if it is available at all, but it is best just to check from time to time:)

Always glad to help,
cheers,

Sarah.

Thank you. I notice that AVG 8 has many more 'settings' than AVG 7.5 had. Therefore, I am trying to 'fine tune' AVG 8 so that it will work best for me. I prefer to do all my own updating (I don't like to have automatic updates done). Therefore, I have not checked the "Enable this task" in the Scheduled settings.

Perhaps you can help with the following two questions; if not, maybe you would suggest I post as new thread.

#1- I notice when I went to the Vista Security Center (malware section) it shows "AVG Anti-Virus Fee as STATUS = ON. However, it shows AVG Anti-Spyware as STATUS = OUT OF DATE. I have just downloaded latest updates (DB 270.6.4./1617). Does your's show the same?
#2- In Advanced Settings, when I click on Update it shows:
"When to update files" (What files are they talking about?)
Update Immediately is CHECKED.
Under that - "REQUIRE CONFIRMATION FROM THE USER" is CHECKED.
For the category at bottom = "ADDITIOANL UPDATE OPTIONS" =
All three ARE CHECKED.

Is that what you have?
As I said, I don't know what this "When to update Files" is referring to (or what files they are referring to) and if it is an AUTOMATIC procedure. Would you know? Also, as I said, I don't like things to be automatic (I prefer to do my own downloads, etc.)and I think this "When to update Files" is an automatic procedure, and/but I don't see any way to change it.

By the way, I am not receiving any email notices that answers have been posted to this thread. Is there some place I have to check in order to be notified when answers are posted to this thread? Thank you for you kind help.
Alice

OK, I'm back already.
And yes, alicez, those settings are alright. They are the default settings and you can leave them like that.
In fact you can leave all settings the way they are, they are safe:)

There are some settings I changed, but that is a matter of personal taste.
I'll walk you through them.

In Schedules you can keep the default and that means your computer get's scanned every day.
I have set that to once a week + run at startup if task has been missed.

And in Emailscanner I checked 'check outgoing mail'.
But I unchecked 'certify mail' in both cases. It adds a text to your email that the message has been checked and I don't see any benefit in that.

Depending on how fast your system is, you might want to disable the LinkScanner.
I have Vista Home Premium on a fast PC and don't notice the difference, but a lot of people found AVG slowed their computer down and the LinkScanner was the main contributor.
When you do disable the Linkscanner, you also need to check LinkScanner in Ignore Faulty conditions (Tools> Advanced Settings - but you already had found them, obviously LOL)
If you have a new and fast system you might as well leave it on.

Hope this helps,
Sarah.

alicez,

Welcome to The HTG Forums.

Sorry no one has answered your question more quickly.

I'm going to to put your question back at the top of the list so a member who is using AVG 8 with Vista may see it and respond.

Kindest Regards,

I just installed AVG 8 on my Vista Premium. I wonder if someone could tell me if the following settings are correct? I am new to computers and find it very confusing.
Scan Settings:
First 6 are all CHECKED
Scan for rootkits GRAYED OUT
Scan infectable files only is UNCHECKED

"Set additional scan reports..."
When I click on the above, it show 5 categories and ALL 5 are UNCHECKED.
(I looked at the AVG manual online, but it is very confusing to me!)

Would anyone be able to tell me if these settings are correct?

Thank you
Alice
