Oh...another question. My Flash Drive is configured in the NTFS format. I've read it is very important to properly eject a NTFS drive using the "safely remove" route. Trouble is once ReadyBoost is functioning the flash drive always shows up as in use and thus cannot be safely removed. I've read the best thing to do is just pull it out without using the safely remove option but that may assume the flash drive is formatted as FAT32.

I know I can go back to the drive properties readyboost tab and choose do not use this drive but that is a pain in the neck.

Can I safely just pull out the flash drive even though it is formatted in NTFS?
Can I still store files on the drive in the remaining space available or will it be lost when I just pull out the drive without "safely removing"?

I have a Dell XPS 1530 laptop with 4 gb ram. Can ReadyBoost help when I already have 4 gb ram installed?

When I put in my flash drive and select ReadyBoost a page comes up with a button already clicked Do Not Use. Should I click on the Use button or does the default Do Not Use mean I shouldn't use ReadyBoost with my flash drive (which has 32 gb ram)

@FMZ, the problem with that is, that if you use a stick that is too slow, you are defeating the purpose of Ready Boost and may actually end up slowing the system down. I would rather look for a stick with a fast read/write speed. They are so cheap these days anyhow.
@Bucshot, you never said how much RAM you have. If you have only 1GB of RAM, you may want to consider getting 2GBs. You need to get 2x1GB dimms that cost appr. $44 for modern laptop RAM. If you need more info, post back with make and model.

I suggest you just get another flash drive. If you have to buy it, make sure it says "Ready Boost Certified" (Vista certified means little in this context). And you should get one that is equal in size to your RAM size.

Bucshot, keep in mind that Vista certified is NOT the same as ReadyBoost certified. Also, though it was written over a year ago, this excellent article has good info on ReadyBoost requirements for flash drives and how to check in Event Viewer to see the results of Vista's testing of the flash drive:

ScottW is right. A ready Boost capable flash drive shows "Ready Boost" as one of the tabs. Yours aparently is not "capable". Do you have any other flash drives you could try?

Bucshot, hello and welcome. I know which tab you are referring to -- the one that should show up in the Properties sheet for the drive. Apparently Vista doesn't think your flash drive is ReadyBoost capable.

Is your flash drive ReadyBoost certified? This is not necessary, but it would be reassuring. Have you installed Service Pack 1 (SP1)? There are improvements to ReadyBoost as well as patches that may help. To see if ReadyBoost is available, go to Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Performance Information and Tools -> Advanced Tools and look for "Configure my Windows ReadyBoost device". Is it there? What happens if you select it?

In Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Autoplay you can make the settings for the little window. Easiest is to "Reset all Defaults". You can also click on the blue link on the bottom of the little window. The reinstallation should not have mattered (but one never knows for sure). I am pretty sure your ready boost did not install. That's why I asked you earlier to look into Properties of the flash drive. There you can find out.
