Oz, I really cannot answer your question except that something is wrong in your system. What the effects on Ghost are, is hard to tell. Did you reinstall Ghost and see whether it works now? And why did you get Ghost alltogether if you have Ultimate - that has a very similar native function as Ghost.
If nothing else works, you may have to reinstall Vista in order to start with a clean plate. But first I would try to reinstall from your Ghost restore points booting from the Ghost cd as described here (case2): http://cid-475a0a48ca6d4035.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Ghost%20recovery/System%20Recovery%20with%20Ghost.pdf

here's what i did, i uninstalled norton ghost. just out of curiosity i restarted and hit f8. there was no advanced boot options to repair the computer. could this be why norton ghost and vista ultimate both can not restore the hard drive?
everything i have is kept on an external hard drive, it's no big deal reinstalling vista. but i would like to be able to have one of these work so i don't have to go through the update/driver install process.

Oz, It is pretty obvious that Ghost got corrupted by something in your system. Please do the following.
1. Go to All Programs > Norton Ghost > User Guide and download this onto your system so that you have it handy for reference
2. Uninstall your Ghost - use this program to uninstall http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?OpenDocument&lg=en&ct=us&seg=hho&src=hot
3. Reinstall Ghost as described in the user guide pages 22 and following. Make sure MyBook is defined as backup destination.
4. Write a new restore point
5. Open Ghost > click "Tools" on the left > click "Manage Backup Destinations" (on the top) and see whether this backup is there and whether it also has the old backups. It is possible that you lost the old restore points (since I never had your scenario - my 3 Ghosts always worked perfectly - I am not certain what would happen to the old restore points when you reinstall. But you will see.)

PS: I had a good laugh reading the second part of your post.

it's in big red warning letters as soon as i opened ghost up. it couldn't locate (J:) open file location (or something like that). from my computer to my book is the norton ghost folder with the image and documents still in it. they're just huddled together, all sad and lonely. the little orphaned back-ups in their tattered folder. a sad look on their fonts. soon they'll be rummaging through the hard drive dumpster looking for scraps to eat

Oz, What does that mean "Ghost cannot find MyBook". In what kind of operation did you get that message. And did Ghost actually write the restore points? Open MyBook in COMPUTER and see whether the restore points it was supposed to write are there. We'll get that fixed, don't worry. It may have to be tomorrow, because it is after midnight by me and I was out all day celebrating the wife's birthday.

A WEEK LATER:
i tested norton ghost. the image and files were backed up to mybook(J:) my external hard drive. in my computer it recognizes mybook(J:) norton ghost says backed up to mybook(J:) BUT, norton ghost can't find mybook(J:) now. so i right click a document and i can see "send to", oh and look it says mybook(J:). it seems everything on planet earth can find mybook (J:) except nortons garbage program that says it backed up all that information to where? "MYBOOK FREEKIN J". the only thing this junk found was $70 on my credit card.

Understand. You apparently did not make the right settings. I made a little tutorial for someone else that may help you do the settings. If you want only 1 backup, you have to uncheck all. (this you have to download)
http://cid-475a0a48ca6d4035.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Ghost%20tutorials/s-Checking%20and%20setting%20Ghost%20schedule.pdf
Here is another one for the documents backup settings: (this you can read directly if you set it to "full size" - top left directly above the picture)
http://s260.photobucket.com/albums/ii36/whs37/Ghost/?action=view&current=Ghostschedulechange.png
If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask. I think Ghost is a superb product (with a few minor flaws). But you have to set it up correctly.

you're funny, whs. after i saw what happened i tried to do a hard drive restore just to see if it worked. there was nothing to restore. it kept wanting me to find a program to open it with online. i did read the documentation it came with, and there was a lot of it. actually an abnormally large amount. i'll probably keep it but i won't reinstall it until i find out how to make it less intrusive, and how to make it more intuitive. it's definately not a set and forget program. all i wanted was a symantec restore type program that did nothing but make an exact image ONCE that i could always go back to. this thing never stopped. constantly popping up a screen or a red X on my task bar or wanting to back something up. i have things to do and places to on here. is there a way to delete my earlier post? i'm not a morning person, lol

0zSpitt, I think your problem is that you don't know what you are doing. I run Ghost and I run Norton IS without any problems. Was able to recover already a few times with Ghost - really saved me. Maybe you want to read the documentation! And trying to backup 1TB to a 160GB disk does not sound too swift either.
PS. If you have a question regarding Ghost, don't hesitate to ask. We will try to find you the answer. And Norton Ghost also has a pretty good technical support. I usually use their chat room which proved to be quite good. And Btw: It is difficult to make backups with a waffle iron - but the way you are going, you might try that too.

ive supposedly have this working now. it took longer because i set it to run slower so i could stay online without having it slow me down. my backup took 49 gigs. i have my computer updated with drivers, updates etc. plus i have music and pictures installed. i'll give it a week, then see if it works. i didn't need a norton removal tool, i never use their products until now. this is a new hard drive with a fresh os install

Looks right to me too. Mine are more in the 30 to 35GB range (for a base restore point - as you can see in the pic I posted earlier), but I have a lot of stuff on the system. I have 62GB used on my C:\ - so it looks like it compresses to about half the original size.
