Aleeve,

Photoshop is waaay more than i need. My wife is the image guru and she loves it. I only need to re size and touch up some wallpapers now and then. I honestly know almost nothing about image editing and have no desire to learn. I leave that all up to her. That pain.net program is perfect for my needs. I used it last night to crop a couple of pics and i was happy. I usually have her do it for me, but i wanted to do some yesterday and didn't want to wait for her.

For very simple editing tasks is IrfanView (freeware) also suitable and it is a wonderful pictureviewer.
PhotoFiltre is also free and has a lot of features and is very easy to handle.

Gimp is an exellent program. But for what you are trying to do it is probably an overkill. It has far more function than you are looking for and the inherent complexity that comes with it. I use it to make photo overlays and I understand it has similar functions as Photoshop. The best to find out is when you try it. It comes with an extensive on-line documentation. For the easy functions that you were describing, I use the MS Office Picture Manager that is included in Office 2007.

I have photoshop elements 6.0
and it is amazing
Not too big, and covers my every need,
however, for just cropping and resizing
can't you just use windows photo editor - comes with vista?

Hey guys,

My wife is a photographer and she uses Photoshop. That's great for her. However, i just want something quick and light. All i ever do is crop and re size some pics. I could install photoshop on my PC, but that would be over kill. I was wondering if you guys had any opinions and recommendations on free or low cost photo editing apps. Usually I'm resizing, cropping or maybe using the clone tool to cover up text on a wallpaper or something. Thanks guys. Oh, what do you think about photoshop elements? is it a memory hog bloated pos? or would you recommend it? thanks.

If anyone is curious, here's my wife's site:
